    PASADENA >> The City Council voted to oppose the 710 Freeway tunnel late Monday night, changing the city's 14-year commitment to seeing the freeway completed. While it seemed all members opposed the tunnel, some said the city was hamstrung from taking a stand by a 2001 ballot measure in which 58 percent of Pasadena voters supported extension of a 4.5-mile portion of 710 Freeway from Valley Boulevard in Alhambra to the interchange of the 210/134 freeways in Pasadena.

    Philippe Brian Lutete, who is accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman in Arcadia on Wednesday, was charged with rape, kidnapping and assault Friday but his arraignment was continued until May 19. Police say Lutete kidnapped the woman around 3 a.m. and held her hostage at his house in a gated community for 11 hours while out on bail for a similar assault. Philippe Brian Lutete, who is accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman in Arcadia on Wednesday, was charged with rape, kidnapping and assault Friday but his arraignment was continued until May 19. He is seated next to Louise Gulartie, an alternate public defender.

Caltrans and the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority have added two additional hearings on May 6 at La Canada High School Auditorium, and on May 7 at the Los Angeles Christian Presbyterian Church, bringing the total number of public hearings to four.

    A Rosemead man was killed Wednesday night after his motorcycle collided twice with a dump truck on the westbound 10 Freeway, east of Fremont Avenue.     I'm not sure if Baccali Cafe & Rotisserie is the oldest of the many Hong Kong-style cafes in the San Gabriel Valley, but I am sure that I can't remember a time when it wasn't on Valley Boulevard just west of Garfield Avenue in Alhambra - nor a time when the parking lot wasn't filled to overflowing, and there wasn't a wait. What I refer to as Hong Kong-style cafes are restaurants, often open from early morning until late night, that split the difference between Chinese and Western fare, with a strong edge of old-school continental.

In the past two years, Monterey Park has received more than 140 complaints about non-permitted boarding houses in existing single-family homes, condominiums and apartment units - “residential motels” with makeshift “unsafe” partitions, according to a report by Michael Huntley, Monterey Park's community and economic development director.
