    A vacant lot in Alcoa's historic Springbrook neighborhood could be the site of 10 new houses, as the Alcoa Board of Commissioners voted Monday to rezone the property from Neighborhood Commercial to Mixed Use District E-3. If the proposed rezoning is approved on second reading Aug. 8, the single-family homes would be the first residential properties built as part of the redevelopment of the former ALCOA Inc. West Plant site where Hall Road meets Alcoa Highway.

    The first new houses planned near the former ALCOA Inc. West Plant property moved one step closer to reality, as the Alcoa Municipal/Regional Planning Commission voted to recommend to the Alcoa Board of Commissioners the rezoning of an undeveloped block in Alcoa's Springbrook neighborhood and the corresponding changes to the city's Future Land Use Plan/Map. Planning commissioners also gave the go-ahead Thursday to a concept plan for the vacant 2.4 acres bordered by Lake, Lodge, Faraday and Maury streets - across from the back of Alcoa High School - that were platted as part of the West Springbrook Subdivision in March 1944, but never developed.
