Top 18 public golf holes: Most attractive
1. Granville Golf Course, No. 18 (par 4, 355 yards): It's hard not to approach the tee box and be jarred out of your routine once you see the view. The tee, which sits 125 feet above the fairway, looks out onto the rolling hills, woods and homes of Granville, as well as a couple of holes left to right. Just as beautiful is the sight of any well-struck drive, which by any human account will stay in the air for anywhere between 5 to 10 minutes, but a stopwatch might disagree. The bunker to the left is the one most likely to come into play, so drives should err to the right. The second shot is slightly downhill -- overshooting the green is common, so go down a club or ease up on your swing. But really, most golfers would be well advised to give up thinking about their scorecard on No. 18, and instead realize they're getting a view of what 355 yards of golf should look like. 2. Longaberger Golf Club, No. 18 (par 4, 434 yards): This could go into most challenging. Or most fun, for that matter. But trumping all other characteristics of the hole is the view from the tee box -- sitting above the green, an eyeful of the expansive Longaberger clubhouse as a reminder of the culinary pampering to come. Bunkers line the fairway all the way to the green, which still will be about 200 yards away after your drive. The final patch of the short stuff is unforgiving, both in speed and curvature. 3. Longaberger Golf Club, No. 9 (par 3, 150 yards): Beauty meets the beast. You are hitting over a lake, so you have to carry the ball the entire way to a slightly elevated green, which is guarded by a bunker on the left-rear. Because of the hazards in front and in back of the hole, it's vital to know what you hit with every mid-iron in your bag. Between shots, you're treated to gently sloping terrain, making its way to a picturesque waterfall feeding into one of the course's ponds. A nice-looking way to finish the front nine. 4. Harbor Hills Country Club, No. 6 (par 5, 457 yards): This is a long par 4, but you'll find a little comfort when you set up for your approach shot. Softening the scene is a gorgeous view of Buckeye Lake behind the green and No. 7 fairway. Depending on the weather, seeing boats go by can be commonplace, giving the hole a coastal feel. Otherwise, the fairway is uphill and straight, so just drink in the sights on the long walk to the pin. 5. Kyb er Run Golf Course, No. 14 (par 3, 151 yards): This hole's layout immediately catches the eye: The green and four small bunkers lined up behind it form a panther's paw, making this by far and away one of the coolest designs you'll see on a course. There's little advice to be offered for this one -- don't hit long, or you'll get what little claw this kitty has to offer. 6. Licking Springs Trout and Golf Club, No. 18 (par 4, 365 yards): From the elevated tee, golfers will be able to look straight down to the green on this crescent-right hole. The fairway arcs downhill around a pond, with woods around the hole to the left. Unless you can blast your drive, your approach shot is over water, but you can miss left and save yourself the stress. The greens are slow, so there's not much to it once you're on the short end of your bag. Top 18 public golf holes: Most Challenging
1. Longaberger Golf Club, No. 4 (par 5, 504 yards): Rated the toughest hole on the course, and for good reason. You'll need a solid tee shot down the 40- to 45-foot decline ... then you'll need a better second shot. The longer your layup is, and the farther right it is, the more water will come into play on your approach. But this is not your average par 5, which uses its length as its primary shtick. This green has teeth (when you finally get to it). If you go long and left, you'll end up in a bunker -- short and right, you're wet. The green, in addition to having multiple tiers, is lightning-fast. Three- and four-putts are not outside the realm of imagination. Summed up, what the hole lacks in hazard size it makes up for in hazard placement. Every bunker, the water that creeps out in front of the green -- this hole is designed to punish any errant shot. 2. Burning Tree Golf Course, No. 17 (par 4, 352 yards): Rotten? Unfair? A slur of expletives? That sums up this nightmare. The only reason this fell behind Longaberger's No. 4 was its lack of convention -- a trick artist, and a nasty one at that. You have to make a solid drive or else you'll have to lay up with your second shot. Even with a long drive, you're still shooting blind on the approach. But if you're short, you're in more trouble -- before reaching the green, the entire hole takes a wicked downhill slope -- toward water. In short, the key to this hole is having pinpoint accuracy with your irons, because anything errant will send your ball into parts unknown. 3. Cumberland Trail Golf Club, No. 6 (par 3, 190 yards): All players will start off with a difficult tee shot, and a wind that's constantly in your face. The green is big, but that's its only consolation: It's guarded by a bunker on the left and is surrounded by water -- because of the length, the best play is the short play, as mid- to long irons could have you bouncing into the drink. The green is uphill front to back, giving you another reason to pull up. 4. Clover Valley Golf Club, No. 7 (par 5, 531 yards): A slight dogleg left, with the first fairway bunker lurking slightly right of your landing area off the tee. Your tee shot has to carry 210 yards to clear the bunker, or try to miss the bunker left and risk nailing the tree line. Reaching this par 5 in two almost is out of the question, and Bobby Jones won't help you if you sink yourself in the sand. You have to have a solid second shot, and your third shot will have to carry over a creek that lines up in front of the green. Also, long hitters would be wise to mind the smaller fairway bunker to the right and in front of the creek, as anything but a perfect wedge out of the sand will send your ball into the hazard. The green isn't too difficult, but by then, you're probably putting for bogey -- if you're lucky. 5. Longaberger Golf Club, No. 8 (par 4, 420 yards): This crescent hole gives you options off the tee in the form of a split fairway. You can take a shortcut, but unless you can carry the ball 220 yards down the left side, your ball will be in unmanageable rough. If you go right, the fairway is severely sloped, so your approach shot almost is guaranteed to come from an uneven lie. To make matters worse, this shot will be directed toward a peninsular green -- the safest shot is short and to the right, with everything else risking a bath. 6. Willow Run Golf Course, No. 13 (par 4, 378 yards): Maybe one of the tightest driving holes in the area. To make matters worse, the fairway is all uphill. After the fairway crests, your second shot will have to cross a dry creek and a small wall that guards the front of the green. Anything short, and you'll be taking a drop. The green is large and very undulated, making a three-putt very possible.
