Supreme Court assigned all James Brown cases to Aiken Judge Doyet Early, who announced at an April 5 status conference that he wanted to proceed as quickly as possible.

    Four children and one grandchild of music legend James Brown have dropped their 2007 will challenge under a Feb. 24 settlement order, but their agreement with the estate does not resolve the James Brown estate battle nor does it answer questions about the copyrights he left to his education charity, the "I Feel Good" trust. Circuit Court Judge Doyet A. Early III of Aiken approved a settlement with five will contestants despite vigorous objections from attorneys for two of Brown's sons, Terry and Daryl, at a Jan. 14 hearing.

    The James Brown family continued its nine-year estate battle at a Jan. 14 hearing in Aiken, with two sons asking that their father's will be carried out as written and four will contestants - along with the estate - asking for a settlement. The hearing was punctuated with objections about possible violations of procedure related to hearsay testimony and allowing an attorney to testify as a witness without giving notice.

    The 2014 accounting for James Brown's estate shows that current trustee Russell Bauknight and his attorneys were paid almost $2 million of $2.9 million in receipts during the year. The accounting, filed in August 2015, showed a beginning balance of $469,870 and an ending balance of $712,643, with receipts of $2.9 million and disbursements of $2.6 million.
