Students and administrators at DePaul University College of Law have agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to avoid having the annual Barristers' Ball - the law school prom, more or less - at Chicago's Trump International Hotel and Tower. On Tuesday, associate dean of student affairs Michael Burns wrote in an email that he was grateful to students who wanted to move the Barristers' Ball from the Trump Tower because of its association with the billionaire real estate tycoon who is running for president this year as a Republican. Braving cold temperatures, a light drizzle and a mighty wind that was miserable even by Second City standards, about 2,000 protesters took to Chicago's glitzy Magnificent Mile shopping district on Friday afternoon to protest the 2014 shooting death of 17-year-old black teenager Laquan McDonald by a white police officer and the city's slow response to the incident. Led by Jesse Jackson, protesters held signs reading "Stop Police Terror," "White Silence = White Consent" and the like as they marched northward down the middle of Michigan Avenue on "Black Friday," the traditional post-Thanksgiving day of shopping frenzy. A tiny faction of old, white communist agitators led and helped organize Wednesday night's protest in Chicago in response to the release of a dashcam video showing a white police officer fatally shoot 17-year-old black teenager Laquan McDonald 16 times. At a prior protest on Tuesday night, members of the Revolutionary Communist Party energetically distributed fliers communicating their plan to co-opt the budding protest movement. Comment?
What is most remarkable about reports of escalating urban violence across America is that politicians and the media remain just as narrowly focused on police tactics in the aftermath of Ferguson and Baltimore. Even as 2015 murder rates for Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City , New Orleans, St. Louis, Washington, DC, have skyrocketed by double digits over the same period a year ago, the extent to which serious adult crime is a direct function of youthful lawbreaking continues to be ignored.
