On Sunday, descendents of both survivors and rescuers joined together in Terence Bay, N.S. to mark the 145th anniversary since the ship's sinking off the same shores.

    There are some 1.5 million people worldwide who still routinely work "in peril on the sea" , the Anglican Archbishop of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island reminded a well-attended gathering on the shore of Terence Bay, Sunday, as folks of various faiths, communities and ages came to celebrate a "blessing of seafarers and their boats" and a remembrance of a terrible night 144 years ago. The annual service marks the sinking of the SS Atlantic, a sail-and-steam liner that foundered off Lower Prospect in 1873.
