  1. Asian markets edge higher; Chinese shares rise despite earthquake, higher inflationRead the original story

14 min ago | The Canadian Press

    - Asian markets edged tentatively higher Monday as investors awaited a slew of key U.S. economic data and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech this week for hints of what's in store for the U.S. economy. Shanghai's main index inched up, but the advance was capped by worries over inflation and over potential damage from a severe earthquake that hit central China's Sichuan province. Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 index rose 88.02 points, or 0.6 per cent, to 13,743.36, and Australia's benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index climbed 1 per cent to 5,828.5 after briefly touching a three-month high. Financial markets in Hong Kong and South Korea were closed for public holidays. Australia's market rose for the third straight day, led by National Australia Bank and other banking stocks after Westpac Banking Corp. approached St. George Bank with a takeover proposal. "Very much in focus were banking stocks, with corporate activity seeming to ignite a lot of interest in that sector, which flowed through to the rest of the market," said Helen Spencer, a private client advisor at Macquarie Equities in Brisbane. Trading in shares of Westpac, Australia's fourth-largest bank by market capitalization, and St. George, the fifth-biggest, is halted for talks on an all-share bid. If successful, the deal would create Australia's largest bank by market capitalization. David Halliday, private client advisor at Macquarie Private Wealth in Sydney, said that Westpac's move sent a strong signal to the market about where the major banks saw their own sector. National Australia Bank advanced 5.9 per cent, Commonwealth Bank gained 4.4 per cent, and Australia and New Zealand Banking Group added 3 per cent. Investors in the regional were cautious ahead of the release of April consumer price index and retail sales figures out of the U.S., a key export market. Also, Bernake and other Federal Reserve officials are giving speeches this week. "Players are watching how the outcome (of the speeches) will affect the global stock market," said Tsuyoshi Segawa, equity strategist at Shinko Securities in Tokyo. He said lingering worries over the credit crisis continued to weigh on the market. "We all knew that the credit crunch problem has not been resolved, it's just that optimism has outperformed pessimism lately," he said. In Tokyo, gainers included electronics firm Kyocera Corp. rose 2.1 per cent and Konica Minolta Holdings Inc. jumped 12 per cent. In mainland China, stocks rebounded from early losses on gains in banking shares. The Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.4 per cent to 3,626.98. The Shenzhen Composite Index rose 1.3 per cent to 1,111.97. Share prices fell after the government announced that the consumer price index, the country's main inflation benchmark, rose 8.5 per cent in April over the same month a year earlier. That was an acceleration from March's 8.3 per cent increase, although short of February's 8.7 per cent rise, the highest in 12 years. In afternoon trading, heavyweight banks rose on bargain hunting. Shenzhen Development Bank rose 2.9 per cent while Bank of Communications gained 1.3 per cent. "Investors were rebuilding positions after the official data confirmed market rumors, but concerns that the high inflation won't ease in the short term would limit buying interest," said Amy Lin, an analyst at CSC International Holdings. Analysts said the central bank would likely implement more tightening measures to curb inflation, such as raising banks' reserve requirement ratio or benchmark interest rates. Analysts said that shares of companies located in the Sichuan region may fall in coming sessions due to the 7.8-magnitude earthquake, which struck Wenchuan county in Sichuan midafternoon Monday. Shares in aircraft makers also rose after the launch Sunday of a state-owned manufacturer of large planes. Hafei Aviation Industry surged by the 10 per cent daily limit, while Xi'an Aircraft International soared 5.3 per cent to 25.68 yuan. Elsewhere in the region, the Philippines' key index rose 0.9 per cent to 2,803.49, while Taiwan's main index rose 0.4 per cent to 8,830.05. In currencies, the dollar was quoted at 103.32 yen midafternoon in Tokyo, compared with 103.04 yen in New York late Friday. The euro stood at US$1.5406, down from US$1.5456 late Friday in New York.
