How Will 'Passion' Play?

Last month, when Mel Gibson picked up his 2003 People's Choice Award as America's favorite male movie star, it was for a year in which he hadn't made a movie. Maybe if he didn't make any in 2004, he joked, he could win the award again.

He has, however, made a movie.

'The Passion of the Christ,' his account of the last 12 tortured hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, opens this week - on Ash Wednesday, the most provocative opening date since Miramax tried to release 1995's gay-themed 'Priest' on Good Friday. It has become, thanks to a campaign of carefully strategized screenings for religious groups, the most talked-about, anticipated, analyzed and publicized 'unseen' film in years. It has placed the personal religious beliefs of its director, an Oscar-winning Hollywood star, on a kind of public display unheard of outside of a national political campaign.
