this is ridiculous. Kids are overprotected and its a travesty that they can access a lot of stuff online yet can't read a classic work of American fiction. In toronto we had a similar situation earlier this year when some parents tried to have "to kill a mockingbird" banned because it has derogatory remarks about african americans.

I believe that books such as this one may have some benefit to some children but they do need to be read with adult participation and with the parents knowing that the school is using it.
Banning books is a very last resource. |

the superintendent says, "i'll be on this like a hen on a wet worm"... now that is disgusting!!

This is the perfect example of what is wrong with California. It is becoming a twisted Utopia of control freaks. This sounds similar to my grandmother's generation of beliefs "good girls don't know about this kind thing". Not ALL middle school children could understand this book but some could. Why limit their reading choices? The book was checked out 5 times in 5 years, obviously it hasn't been popular. One more choice controlled...

They want drugs legalized yet they are worried about classic literature. When is California suppose to fall into the shark infested ocean? |

Hey now, not all of California.(I am not in Elk grove) We don't even have earthquakes where I live. I am however for legalizing pot. We could use the tax revenue to help pay for the entitlement programs that are bankrupting the state. |

It is one of my favorite books and one that I used at the college level and when I taught in the prison system.
I would never support banning any book in the general sense but I feel the material in this one should not be available before the highschool level and maybe best with a teacher's guidence. The underlying message is an important and positive one, but the imagery can be disturbing..... and children do need guidence to help shape them into healthy adults. It becomes a debate in what is appropriate in public scholls with everyone having their own opinion on what they want their child exposed to so most schools err on the side of more conservative values.... it is not like some couldn't be set aside for parental permission....just as parents can also decide to allow additional reading at home... |

1 Pot use, which effects short term memory and the ability to learn.....everyone knows who the stoner kid is in highschool....should help put more people on those entitlement programs too......which more pot sales would support... But where are they gonna get the money for pot? |

How sad the story is about the negative experiences of a young girl and while we are concerned about some reading it, others are living this tragedy....

Same place money is found for crack I suppose. Sorry for the sarcasm. I do feel money spent on removal of crops and prosecution of marijauna violations is waste. Here they use helicopters, I am sure that isn't cheap...If legalized it should follow the same rules as alcohol ie it shouldn't be sold to minors. That works so well now. As I mentioned earlier the book should be a choice. I am bothered by limiting a students choice of books. Who decides and where does it end? |

Son had to read this in high school. He said it was mild compared to what really goes on in life.
People trying to ban this are as stupid as the ones trying to ban "To Kill a Mockingbird" and "Huckleberry Finn." With a little education you realize these books are not about what is first assumed. |

All books which could cause even the most sensitive little bruiser confusion or self identification issues should be removed from any library in which those little boboloons are allowed to enter.
Education of our little beetlebugs from anything which could make them looney, must be eradicated. I mean, look what happened to that wack job Sarah Palin. Think of what she might have been able to contribute had her brain not been fermented in Apache Joy Juice, and raison jack. Raised in Sandpoint, Idaho (Pablum Land, trust me) she went off to all points north where she learned to be a busha-busha. Without question, she caused McCaine to lose the election to that upstart Ebola. |

Talibangelicals and general fussbudgets don't want young people having access to anything having to do with reality, whether it's their kids or anyone else's who might be unbrainwashed.

The town in Humboldt County California where pot was legalized for medical purposes and it got out of control. Perhaps I have spelled the town's name wrong. Maybe another poster from that area could be helpful.
It is quite an interesting situation.

You spelled it correctly. The whole state of California voted to legalize pot for medical purposes. You get a note / prescription from your doctor and then do the paper work to get a medical pot card. This allows you to purchase, posses and smoke pot legally. You are also allowed to grow 6 plants for personal use. Now this part I am not sure of - I believe the county of Humboldt (Arcada is in the county) voted to allow people to grow 99 plants. With out restrictions like zoning rules or permits. I saw that show about it.It is a shame what the growers do to the residences and a bigger shame that 1 in 7 houses is used for growing. If they would have limited the growing areas to commercial or outdoor use only that could have prevented some of it. But 99 plants, what did they expect. Humboldt county has always been a mecca of sorts for pot growers. By not requiring permits that could easily be taxed they screwed themselves out of tax revenues. The only ones making big money is the growers. IMHO :) |

Thank you for providing the info I only got to see half of the documentary.
I felt sorry for the people who felt unsafe using their yards anymore and talking about the increase in gun crimes etc. Sounds like it was a charming. slightly hippie community that found itself sitting in the midst of an all out drug war. Lots of points to consider I guess because the veteran with the child was also quite compelling.
