Growing up 500 miles from Manhattan, local kids might not feel a link with Broadway. Now they can. Laura Bell Bundy, the 'Legally Blonde' star, will give a class next month at the Wharton Center. Joining her will be Paul Canaan, one of her co-stars. 'I think they will be spectacular teachers,' said Mike Brand, the Wharton director. For kids in grades 3-8, there will be quick sessions, involving one half-day. For grades 9-12, there will be a three-afternoon session. For both, a recital will follow on Aug. 6. In both cases, kids will be coached by people who have already had Broadway success. 'These are young stars who are going places,' Brand said. Then again, some people know them mainly from MTV. 'I think we were so lucky,' Canaan said. 'MTV took an interest in the show early.' The network saw lots of youth potential in 'Blonde,' in which a ditzy sort becomes a Harvard law student. It: * Aired the musical. * Launched a reality show (10 p.m. Mondays, plus many reruns) to choose the new star, when Bundy leaves the show. Canaan is one of the judges on that show - which, he grants, requires some TV touches. 'In a real New York audition, you don't rip them apart,' he said. 'You just say, 'Thank you very much. Next.' ' The show has given him a chance to see lots of auditions, good and bad. That fits neatly into the Wharton workshop; for the older kids, it will deal with auditioning. The idea started, Brand said, when Bundy gave a concert for Wharton subscribers. She mentioned she and Canaan were working on a teaching program. Brand helped her get in touch with other auditorium directors. They chose their day for leaving Broadway (July 25) partly because of the dates at Wharton, Canaan said. The 'Legally Blonde' experience has provided quick lessons in dealing with young people, Canaan said. 'You're looking at 1,700 kids in pink.' Canaan did his first tour at 21. At 32, he's been in the Broadway casts of 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,' 'Miss Saigon,' 'Legally Blonde' and the 'La Cage aux Folles' revival. He's in the 'Blonde' ensemble, which requires a workout. 'They're amazing dancers,' Brand said. Bundy has done small TV roles, including Marah in 'Guiding Light.' On Broadway, she was Amber in 'Hairspray,' understudied Glinda in 'Wicked' and received a Tony nomination as Elle in 'Legally Blonde.'
