Movie Review: "The Drop"

Dark and moody, clever and artful with a twist on clich, The Drop is a surprising and tantalizing fall crime drama sprinkled with indelible moments provided by the consistently extraordinary Tom Hardy. The Drop , sadly, is also the last original movie to feature the late James Gandolfini.

It's a good example of how international the movie business has become that a Belgian director , his stars from Great Britain , Sweden , New Jersey and Belgium met the media in a hotel room in Toronto to discuss a movie set in Brooklyn written by a guy from Boston. The guy from Boston is author Dennis Lehane , who set "Animal Rescue," the short story "The Drop" is based on, in his usual Boston-area, working-class neighborhood, but was told by producers that they thought he had become a victim of his own success and that blue-collar Boston was played out.

Movie review: James Gandolfini shines in last role in The Drop

Tom Hardy, left, stars as a quiet lunk serving drinks at the bar run by his cousin, James Gandolfini, right, a former loan shark shoved aside by Chechen mobsters. Although there are a few scenes of bloodshed, The Drop is much more about the nature of violent men than the brief explosions of violence that can define an entire life.

The Drop (and Gandolfini) Find New Life in Lowlifes

The Drop , a richly textured, beautifully acted film collaboration between Belgian director Michal R. Roskam and novelist-turned-screenwriter Dennis Lehane , takes place in the present, but its heart lies in the noirish past of movies and literature. In that shadowy realm, tough guys are endlessly quotable, and most everyone - even the hero - is holding tight to a terrible secret.

Gandolfini returns to crime for final film a The Dropa

A cast against-type-James Gandolfini did fine work in the LA-set romantic comedy "Enough Said," which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival less than three months after his untimely death, but a widely predicted posthumous Oscar nomination failed to materialize. One may be more likely for "The Drop," which returns the erstwhile Tony Soprano to the world of crime, albeit at a lower rung and without the explosive temper.
