Duo celebrates Cuba's musical heyday

“That taught me that Bola was bigger even than I thought. It opened my sky.”

They are a bit of an odd couple. Cuban singer Francisco Cespedes wears a Panama hat, leans in close, floats between thoughts, exudes bohemian charm. Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba tucks in his shirt, and brings the quiet confidence and virtuosity of a studied jazz master. On Oct. 20, they team up at the Carnival Center for a concert that blends their styles into a string of romantic, rum-soaked ballads from their album, Con el Premiso de Bola (With Bola's Permission) . To do the music justice, Cespedes and Rubalcaba have brought two distinct talents, laying the singer's smooth, expressive vocals over a chilled jazz base. 'This disc tries to expose the more lyrical, romantic side of Bola,' said Rubalcaba, a Grammy-winning pianist who left Cuba a decade ago and lives in Coral Springs. While Bola was not a jazzman, his piano playing relied on some of the 'musical codes' of jazz, Rubalcaba said. His singing, meanwhile, drifted from theatrical to sweet. Read more
