"The Nutcracker," the two-act, fairytale ballet originally choreographed by Marius Petipa, evocatively scored by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and adapted from E.T.A. Hoffmann 's tale, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King," premiered in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 1892; it was not deemed a success.
