The United States on Friday urged Israel to provide visas for eight Gazan recipients of the prestigious Fulbright scholarships.
State Department spokesman Tom Casey told reporters that the U.S. is working to "revisit the issue" with Israel, after previously postponing the scholarships because Israel would not grant visas so the students could leave Gaza.
"This is not a political program," Casey said of the scholarships. "We would certainly hope that this kind of very important and very, truly academic program would be something that the Israeli government would be able to help us facilitate."

DOHA (Reuters) - Rival Lebanese leaders signed a deal on Wednesday to end 18 months of political conflict that had threatened to push the country to a new civil war.
The agreement, reached after six days of Arab-mediated talks, also paved the way for the election of a new president.
Parliament will convene on Sunday to elect army chief General Michel Suleiman as head of state, aides to Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri told Reuters in Qatar, where the feuding sides signed the accord.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Top Bush administration security officials ignored FBI concerns over abusive treatment of terrorism suspects, which one agent called "borderline torture," a four-year Justice Department probe found.
The FBI, alarmed by interrogation techniques such as the use of snarling dogs, sexual provocation and forced nudity, clashed with the Defense Department and CIA over their use, said the 370-page report, released on Tuesday by the Justice Department's inspector general.

BEIRUT - Hezbollah gunmen withdrew from the streets of West Beirut on Saturday, but only after what many saw as a humiliating climbdown by the U.S.-backed Lebanese government that affirmed the ascendancy of the Shiite militia, and by implication, its Iranian and Syrian sponsors in this troubled corner of the world.
Fighters disappeared from the still-deserted streets and the Lebanese army began asserting its presence after the government conceded two key demands: that the government rescind a challenge to Hezbollah's private telecommunications network and that it reinstate the chief of security at Beirut's international airport.
