At Black Broadcasters' Gala, Eclectic Glamour Is in the Air
It's not every day -- okay, hardly ever is more like it -- that such an eclectic and outsize collection of talents gets together like the get-together last night at the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters annual communications awards dinner.
It's a sure bet that the flame-haired diva Chaka Khan doesn't often hang out with the demure and stately actress Cicely Tyson. Nor is it likely that R&B and reality-TV star Keyshia Cole has spent a lot of time schmoozing with Attorney General Eric Holder. Maybe R&B pioneer Jerry 'The Iceman' Butler has caught Andrae Crouch's gospel act, but that's about as close to overlapping as it seemed to get.

On Rev. King's Day, the Queen of Soul Rules the Night
Someone made an entrance in the balcony, and the audience swiveled its attention from the stage. Flashbulbs popped, heads craned and a murmur ran through the crowd: Who was it? The Obamas? No: actress Cicely Tyson, who was royalty enough to satisfy much of the audience, including an impromptu cheering section that sent up unison cries of 'Cicely!'
'The stars are out tonight!' crowed one audience member, settling back into her seat.
The real star was, of course, Aretha Franklin, the featured artist at the Kennedy Center's annual free Martin Luther King Jr. Day concert, held last night at the Concert Hall, for whom audience members began lining up as early as 8 in the morning.
