Supreme screamer at the Charles
Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, the Rosetta Stone for understanding just about every horror film of the past 40 years, is this weekend's entry in the Charles Theatre's Hitchcock retrospective. Anthony Perkins plays Norman Bates, the reclusive mama's boy with a thing for knives, while Janet Leigh is Marion Crane, the larcenous bank employee who doubtless wishes she had stuck with baths. How influential was Psycho? John Carpenter patterned his 1978 Halloween, possibly the only horror film of the past few decades to rival Psycho's legacy, after Hitchcock's film. He even named his hero, Donald Pleasance's Dr. Sam Loomis, after Marion Crane's illicit boyfriend. Showtime is noon tomorrow at the Charles, 1711 N. Charles St., with encores set for 7 p.m. Monday and 9 p.m. Thursday. Tickets are $6 tomorrow, $8 other times. Information: 410-727-3456 or thecharles.com.
