Vietnam Deports American Democracy Activist
Report: Vietnam Deports American Who Investigated Arrests Of Democracy Activists * Font size * Share * 1 Comment (AP) Police have deported an American citizen of Vietnamese origin who had allegedly come to Vietnam to investigate recent arrests of local democracy activists, a state newspaper reported Saturday. Vo Tan Huan, 25, was deported via the international airport in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday in the presence of U.S. consulate representatives, the Labor newspaper said. Huan was arrested with anti-government documents on July 16, a week after arriving in Vietnam, the newspaper said. It quoted a police report as saying Huan was sent to Vietnam by the U.S.-based Democratic Party of Vietnam _ which the government here considers a subversive organization _ to "collect information" on the recent arrests of local democracy activists. Huan was accused of "sabotaging" the communist government, the newspaper said. Police and embassy officials were not immediately available for comment on Saturday. Over the past month, Vietnamese police have arrested several local pro-democracy activists and accused them of working with exile groups based in the United States that are opposed to the communist regime. They include Le Cong Dinh, a prominent lawyer known for his defense of human rights activists. The Vietnamese government does not tolerate any challenge to its one-party rule. The U.S. government and international human rights groups have often criticized Vietnam for jailing people for peacefully expressing their views. Hanoi says it only imprisons people who break the law. |
