1 Really! I recently loaded Ubuntu Linux on my old workstation. Flawless install, everything worked, including my network connections without the tedious tweaking necessary with Vista. Recently bought a new workstation that shipped with a Vista disk. I've not even taken the disk out of the wrapper. Don't intend to either. Another plus is that Google Earth now comes with StarOfifce suite, from Sun Microsystems, which is compatible with Microsloth Office and is free. I've read that Microsoft runs Unix on its mainframes. Not saying much for their products, is it? |

I like RHEL and several other versions of Linux, but I also like PC first person shooter games. I don't find the same ability for that one thing. Vista is one big PIG though, and having to support it sometimes is like a long slow root canal. |

Vista works for me. If you don't like it, quit complaining and find something else to work with

I'm happy with my Windows XP. If my computer dies before they get rid of Windows Vista, I'll jump to a Mac.

I have used both. I wasn't particularly fond of XP, nor am I that tied to Vista. I admit that Vista was bad when it first released. However, with the subsequent patches and SP1, it has become a lot better and more stable.
I think the biggest problem with Vista was the hype. There was this next-gen OS coming out, and the expectations were high. What you got was a gift-wrapped OS that was basically a re-painted XP with a lot more overhead processes. It is what it is. It's not better than XP, nor is it inferior to XP either. |

Have you looked in to WINE? I've not tried it myself, but according to their database most of the programs I use under Windows will run on Linux using WINE. Lots of games are listed. http://www.winehq.org/ |

Well, because we are discussing the view from the research team about Vista. Obviously you don't agree with their findings, but more intelligent web logs allow for dissension. |

1 I work as a QA Engineer testing software products, I'am microsoft and Cisco certified. I'm also a CISSP. Not saying this to sound like another AH just want to say I know what end of the RJ-45 to plug in :-). I started back loading programs from a cassette recorder into one of the first apples. For microsoft, XP was a excellent OS. Vista is a real disappointment, what were they thinking? On a fast system with 4g of ram it blue screens about 4 to 5 times a week. Left on overnight I'm happy just to finding it did not reboot itself. The configuration is so different from XP that a experienced user will constantly be saying where the &^%$ did they put *.* Lets not even go into $$$ Maybe they have not heard of the open source movement yet but they are going to be in a state of shock when they take a close look. I typing this on a box running backtrack (slax) and open office. Shameless plug if you have not tried Linux lately--please do. The current versions of Fedora and Ubuntu are good--real good and you can try them running off a usb stick or CD rom and not touch the hard drive- its addicting and free :-) To sum it up vista sucks |

Windows Vista is made only for very powerfull computers with certain hardware. I have purchased it and still will not work properly with my sound card. Drivers were slow out of the gate so anybody upgrading to it from XP would have been left out in the cold. After 3 months of purchase, Nvidia still had not written any drivers to make it work with 3D games for my model. Has for sound, my Creative Labs Audigy II got drivers off the bat, but so basic, it was not funny.
The huge problem for Vista was the hype MS used to put it out. That was their worst release ever. Too expensive and heavy for most computers. XP ran from the first time on my machine and most machines I installed it on. Most people I know that purchased a computer which Vista was offered, asked to have XP instead and most companies complied to their demand for obvious reasons! Linux is a possible alternative, if you have a basic box. Anything complicated like having more than one HDD controllers like SATA and big problems will arise to get it going. I am glad some of you can use, but for me the machine is way to custom to even boot after install, if I get to install it. As for MACs, I hate their commercial putting down Vista to boost their sales, it's like saying, that company is down, so jump over here and see. See what, that it's basically the same processors and memory, what's the point. I'd hate to have to relearn another OS, while the one I have still works fine on my machine. Windows XP is by far the best release MS ever did. I actually was working supported customers when it released. MS is a classy company when it comes to treating their employees, so I will always have a place in my heart for them. MAC is certainly not an alternative to Windows, because I cannot play 3D games that I love on it. I have personally used DOS 3.3 up to Windows Vista and my choice is XP. I would advise to anyone suggestion to use Linux to normal users to reconsider. They will most likely hate it and have to go back to their previous OS. For those who are comfortable in formatting their drives to install something totally different and loosing all their files, I'd say go for it. Don't expect to open all your documents with Linux for at least a month, because that is about the amount of time you'll need to install all the software, drivers to get everything going. No setups for that OS, put the files here and write this script, then restart and recompile this and add this there and put this here. Yeah yeah, I'm sure the average user is up for that!!!! Open Office cannot open my MS Excel files because of the special programming within them. It's good for someone that uses the program to write email and do simple spreadsheets, nothing more. |

1 Vista is simply another version of a long line of sh!tty malfunctioning Microsoft products. So Vista is actually more like something already crappy, like TAB cola ,if kept introducing worse and worse tasting versions of itself. |

1 X I agree with a lot of what you stated, a few comments, thanks I'm running a Intel core2 extreme QX9770, I think that would be fast enough?? Microsoft hype Lets go back to about 1994-95 or so. Novell had a superior network OS by far and everyone knew it but it was M$ marketing that put them out front, taking over the server OS in a good % of the market. I understand Linux is not for everyone, in a past life I did support and I can tell you that the IQ of the average user is below Koko's (The gorilla in Maui) I believe the latest mac OS is based on one of the 3 BSD's, I hope they made it more user friendly. Of the people that I know that have switched to Fedora/Ubuntu more than 1/2 stay with it. The install of Linux know for me is about the same level of M$, no problems I have had problems opening about 10% of excel files, not 1 problem with word or powerpoint. If they are created in open office to begin with you have it made. Scripts? ecompile? Respectfully it sounds you have not tried a more recent version of Linux. Kindly try Ubuntu or Fedora Core 9, you may be surprised. A person can try one of the latest versions without installing it to a hard drive. We would be a lot better off as a country if people would try different things like this and so many other facets of the real world than night after night of the boob tube Cheers FSM |
