U.S. ship opens fire on a boat in Suez Canal
An American cargo ship under contract to the U.S. Navy opened fire on a small Egyptian boat while moving through the Suez Canal, the military said Tuesday in a statement. Egyptian authorities said at least one person was killed, but the U.S. said it had no reports of casualties.

Sounds like the boats were told to stop, and all except one did.
The ammunition used in automatic weapons are designed to tumble when fired, meaning they don't normally go straight through a body, as described in the article. We have two different accounts of the weapons being fired, one says all bullets were accoutned for in the water, another says someone was killed; it will be interesting to see which version people here believe. |

Come on omg, it may be seriously stupid, but it was seriously funny at the same time...don't you think so. lol! |
You are a moron. Before trying to correct someone, you should check up on your facts. The ammunition fired from the M-16 and M-60 do, in fact, tumble when leaving the barell. That partly explains why the M-16 is battlesighted at 25 meters, which makes it zeroed at 300 meters. Have you ever fired any type of weapon, except your mouth before? Besides, did you read my post? Even if the bullet only tumbled upon impact, it wouldn't have come straight out. Get a clue butt monkey. |

I no longer have to read comic strips to find humor. I just come here.
Tumbling bullets, wow, a ballistic genius no doubt. How did the Panama Canal get into this? The Suez Canal is a few miles away, like in EGYPT. It is no wonder that comments like this are made when the educational level of America has dropped to txt mssgs, like omg, onyd, l8r. I saw a really bad movie with Luke Wilson where he was accidentally left in a cryo chamber and woke up 500 years in the future. That movie is so scary to me now as it appears to be happening. The population was reduced to TV watching, fast food guzzling, hip hop rapping morons. Stupid people are out reproducing the intelligent people by 10:1. Just because you can get on the net and send a message does not make you smart. Now, writing the XML or Java interface that makes it possible makes you smart. |

I seen these cargo vessels and they are quite large. The Suez is between Eygpt and the Sinai Peninsula and empties in the Red sea. It is about 101 miles long and 300 feet wide. The Sinai side is barren with the exception of some rusty tank hulks and monument left over from the Six day war.
The Eygptian side is for the most part lush and green. In fact half way though the Canal you enter the Great Bitter Lake with the town of Islamabad on the shore which is the president's summer home. The M60 machine gun fires a 7.62mm round which does not "tumble" I think what was meant was that as the bullet leaves the weapon the barrel imparts spin upon the projectile. Depending on the caliber when some rounds hit their target they may bounce off harder material and shatter and "tumble". If a bullet were to tumble upon leaving the barrel it would be no more accurate that a smooth bore musket. |

Tumbling is a good thing...it makes the cases shiney.

The article does not state what kind of weapon was fired. Only that one yahoo claims he saw someone shot through the heart with the bullet exit on the other side.
That's damn good shooting in my book. |
Not a ballistics genius, just in the Infantry for 14 years. When the bullet from the M-16 leaves the barell, it starts tumbling. If you have ever fired on range, you know that you must adjust up and down for the targets out past 50M, because of the trajectory of the bullet. When you battlesight the M16, you do so at 25 meters, and it is adjusted out to 300 meters. |

Isn't the adjustment made for wind and gravity? |
I don't understand what you mean by "tumble"? All standard "rifled" barrel weapons when fired impart spin (horizontal rotation)upon the projectile has it travels though the barrel this increases accuracy. If the barrel was not rifled you would have a 5.56 mm musket. Wind and gravity and humidity only play a part when shooting accurately at great distance (sniping). It is SOP to "battlesight" any individual weapons that way you know you are accurate out to 200/300 yds. When then projectile meets resistance (i.e. human flesh and bone) after a given distance it may tumble especially off of bone and or dense muscle. I hate the M-16 I'm more familiar with the M-14. The M-14 we would zero at 200 yards but you could be accurate out to 600 easy with iron sights. |

I don't care if the bullet tumbles or not, the fact that the boat kept comming after it was worn off several times by a native speaker and in english looks to me the incoming boat had less than peaceful intensions. As we have learned from the USS Cole, let God sort them out.
