Cumbrian taxi driver charged with sex attack on woman, 18, remanded in custody

A taxi driver charged with the attempted rape and sexual assault of an 18-year-old woman has been remanded in custody. Ian George Burge, 36, of Newlands Gardens, Workington, made a brief appearance before District Judge Gerald Chalk at Carlisle Magistrates' Court on Monday afternoon in connection with the alleaged attack on September 12. He faces four charges.

Workington steel statue comes to pass - in roundabout way

DOWN statue sitting on Alan Smith's desk reminds him each day that his dream to erect a 15-tonne tribute to Workington's steelworks heritage will soon become reality. The Allerdale Council leader made a decision in 2006, when the Moss Bay Steelworks closed, to keep a piece of equipment from the plant so that its legacy would not be forgotten.

Negotiations begin to supply Cumbria's CCTV

Negotiations are underway to find a supplier for the scheme, which would see a network of 53 CCTV cameras operating across Carlisle, Barrow, Workington, Kendal, Whitehaven and Penrith. Richard Rhodes, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Cumbria, said: "It is currently anticipated that a contract will be awarded during October 2014, which will operate for a seven-year period subject to satisfactory performance.

Police issue appeal after woman attacked in street

The alleged victim, a young woman, suffered minor injuries after being attacked outside the Vine Bar in Pinfold Street, Workington, in the early hours of Sunday. The suspect was about 35 years old, white, with a slim build, 5ft 5in talland she wore her blond hair in a bobbed style.

Police say the victim was chased by a group of men from Rosemary Lane in Workington towards Harrington Road before being attacked at about 12.45am on Sunday. The main assailant was described as being a white man, of stocky build.

Cumbria police hit out at 128mph bypass driver

Malachy Patrick Cordin, 25, of Furness House, Little Clifton, near Workington, was told Cumbria's roads were not like German autobahns, which have no speed limit. Cordin was caught travelling at 128mph in his Ford Focus on the A595 Distington bypass at 11.30am on May 12. Martin McAlister, defending, told the court that Cordin worked as a gas service layer and frequently had to drive to sites around Cumbria because of his job.

Cumbria Police smash drug crime ring

After an investigation by officers from Cumbria Constabulary's Serious and Organised Crime Unit, members of the drug ring were sentenced to a total of over 73 years. Gary Rickerby, 41, of Washington Street, Workington, received 14 years imprisonment for conspiracy to supply Class A and B controlled drugs.
