Cumbrian judge blasts police over how male rape case was handled

A judge has voiced stinging criticism of the way in which certain aspects of a rape trial were handled by Cumbria Police and the county's Crown Prosecution Service. Judge Peter Hughes QC made the comments after a jury at Carlisle Crown Court convicted Andrew Tew, 44, of raping a drunk stranger at a remote location near the former Haig Pit after he found him on a Whitehaven street at the end of May last year.

Cumbrian man on male rape charge denies alleged victim was unconscious

A MAN on trial accused of raping a stranger has refuted claims that his alleged victim was unconscious during part of the incident, a court has heard. Andrew Tew, 44, told a jury at Carlisle Crown Court that he had no cause for concern about the young man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, during their encounter last summer.

Drunk man raped by stranger, Carlisle court told

A young man who was so drunk he was blacking out was raped by a stranger who found him stumbling around on a Whitehaven street, a jury heard. Andrew Tew, 44, went on trial at Carlisle Crown Court accused of picking up the man before driving him to a remote area and then sexually attacking him.

Man taken to hospital after house fire

A man was taken to hospital this morning after fire broke out in the kitchen of his home at Mossbay Road, Workington. It is thought the fire, at the back of the property, was caused by an electrical fault in a tumble dryer.

New takeaway's opening hours cut over disorder fears

A takeaway boss has been ordered to close his business an hour earlier than others to help tackle late night trouble on Whitehaven's streets. But at Copeland's Licensing Committee, Mr Mehrmanesh's request was turned down and instead he will have to close at 1.30am on those days and midnight on other nights.

Shop to close 'after roadworks hit trade'

A WHITEHAVEN shop has been forced to close after trade plummeted because of town centre roadworks, its manager has claimed. Nisa's Four Seasons store, underneath the multi-storey car park on Swingpump Lane, will close on September 14. And Amit Sharma, manager of the family-run store, says that ongoing roadworks to prepare for the opening of Albion Square are to blame.
