A FORMER West Somerset College pupil has been living the dream in the South of France after being invited to join the team at a top restaurant. Millie Don, who finished her Level 2 in Professional Cookery at the college earlier this year, moved there in the summer.

More funding for new Wembdon village hall and playing fields

PLANS to build a new village hall in Wembdon took a big step closer as West Somerset Council Cabinet approved funding to go towards the A 2million project. Councillors have agreed to give A 250,000 to the Wembdon Village Hall and Playing Fields Trust from a A 3.5million collective pot given to West Somerset Council by French energy giant EDF Energy to mitigate against the disruption caused by building the proposed third nuclear power station at Hinkley Point.

Last chance for West Somerset Council to save crumbling cliffs at Blue Anchor

WEST Somerset councillors are drawing up plans to resubmit a bid to the Environment Agency in order to save crumbling cliff tops at Blue Anchor. At a meeting last Wednesday, the district authority discussed its resubmission which has to be made by the end of this month.

West Somerset College principal positive about new school year

THE principal of a West Somerset school where parents have called for OFSTED to intervene has said the college has had a "positive start" to the new academic year. The County Gazette revealed how disgruntled parents of students at West Somerset College , in Minehead , had set up a petition asking for OFSTED to step in after poor GCSE results in the summer.

RACOON Dog or Tanuki, which has been rehomed at Tropiquaria in West Somerset.

DOG or Tanuki has been rehomed at Tropiquaria after she had been found wandering the streets in another part of the country. Zoological director at Tropiquaria Chris Mosier, said: "Racoon-dogs are originally from places like Japan, but have been introduced into various parts of the world for their fur.

Time to cheer two bits of good news in cancer fight

In the news: The case of brain tumour sufferer Ashya King, pictured with his father Brett who took him abroad in a bid to get treatment not available on the NHS I recently managed to slip away for a few days break with good friends in Somerset which did me a power of good. I was totally spoilt, with lovely homemade cooking, and a few trips out and about, including a good day visiting the wonderful Wells Cathedral with its marvellous scissor arches, and of course a ride on the West Somerset Railway to remind me of my youth and the glorious days of steam.

Free microchipping available for dogs in Minehead

DOG owners in West Somerset are being reminded they can get their pets microchipped at a special free session being run in partnership by West Somerset Council and the Dogs Trust. The Dogs Trust has set up a campaign to microchip as many dogs as possible with the help of its specialist teams.

The survey saw 667 people respond by the end of June this year. People were asked about their satisfaction regarding specific services, waste collection topped the poll with 91% of respondents satisfied, followed by community safety at 88% and council tax at 84%.

West's MPs divided over action in Iraq

West MPs were divided last night over whether Britain should join US air strikes against Islamic State, after Prime Minister David Cameron insisted this country would 'not waver' in the battle against the fundamentalists in Iraq and Syria. British involvement in military action against Islamic State could start as soon as this weekend, with reports that Conservative whips who canvassed opinion among backbenchers in the Commons met with a reluctance to even have a vote on the issue.

Minehead Clock Tower gets go-ahead

AMENDMENTS to controversial plans for a clock tower on Minehead 's seafront have been given planning permission by West Somerset Council , despite residents calling for it not to be built. The clock tower was designed to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee back in 2012, but financial problems meant project organisers had to push the completion date back.

THE husband of a beloved mother-of-three has paid tribute to his wife, a former teacher at a West Somerset school, who died suddenly. Ann Hutchinson, 58, of West Quantoxhead, passed away on August 23.Ann was well loved by her community, and used to work at Danesfield School as a cover teacher.

Driving instructor took own life, inquest hearing told

Scott Hawkins, 41, of The Leat, Bishops Lydeard, had appeared at Taunton Crown Court on March 10 this year, where he pleaded not guilty to 12 charges of inappropriately touching 11 female pupils, West Somerset Coroner Michael Rose was told at Taunton's Old Municipal Buildings on Thursday. The inquest heard how Mr Hawkins had maintained his innocence and that his family and friends were offering emotional and legal support to fight his case.

New bid to save cliff-edge hotel

Plans to pin a cliff to stop a hotel falling into the sea are to be re-submitted to the Environment Agency. West Somerset Councillors have agreed to re-bid for A 570,000 to secure the cliff face and extend the sea wall near the Blue Anchor Hotel, in Minehead.

The absurdity of the government's plans to start killing badgers again is revealed by the revised targets announced last week. A minimum of 316 and a maximum of 785 badgers are to be killed in West Somerset, more in Gloucestershire.
