David Staples is charged with arson after a fire at Tomolly Stables, in Plough Road, Eastchurch, that destroyed five stables, a toilet block and about 10 tonnes of hay on September 3. Staples appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court yesterday and was remanded in custody to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on September 26. A series of large-scale fires at barns across the Island have taken place over recent months, causing hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of damage. Will Adams explorer celebration
The 14th annual Will Adams Festival takes place in Gillingham Park on Saturday, September 13 and will celebrate the work of the explorer who was the first-ever Englishman to travel to Japan. He may have died in 1620 but Adams' legacy is still very strong and this weekend festival goers will remember the Gillingham-born navigator.

Thousands of children are preparing to take the Medway Test next week which may determine which secondary school they attend. A total of 2,565 youngsters youngsters will be taking the exam in school halls across the Towns on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Plans for 5,000 homes on peninsula
Plans to build more than 5,000 homes on the Hoo Peninsula in Kent have been approved by Medway Council. The plans for Lodge Hill, on a Site of Special Scientific Interest in Chattenden, include 5,000 homes, four schools, a healthcare centre and shops.
