A fire which spread from a courtyard into a house via an external vent was tackled by fire crews from North Cornwall.

One fire crew from Holsworthy, two from Launceston and the water carrier from Barnstaple, attended the scene at around 4.22pm. The hay bales were placed against a barn and crews were worried the fire would quickly spread to the outbuilding.

The crew joined firefighters from across Devon after 1,000 wooden pallets and approximately 500 litres of fuel caught alight at Haye Down, between Chillaton and Tavistock late last night.

Update 8.50am: Police are at the scene of a broken down fuel tanker on the southbound lane of the A338 between Launceston and Callington.

A PRIMARY school teacher from North Cornwall has been banned from the classroom after forcing one child to eat custard, slapping another across the face and using a belt to restrain another child in a chair.
