Culloden battlefield a grim reminder of inhumanity of war
“From any war, people will take their own interpretation”
- Some of the world's greatest battlefields are overgrown, their secrets and stories lost to the passage of time. Others are full of monuments that literally obscure the past. Then there is Culloden, the brutal conflict Scotland will never forget.
The barren windswept moor is virtually as it was in 1746 when the British government army confronted the Highland clans in the last major battle to be fought on British soil.
For those who like their history served up with hefty dollops of blood-splattered gore, the visceral experience of the Culloden battlefield visitor centre is sure to please. It opened on April 16 just outside Inverness on the anniversary of the battle that changed the course of history. Its grim tale will also appeal to military history buffs and anyone with Scottish ancestry, and for a wider audience it serves as a reminder of the inhumanity of war. Read more
