1 The BBC see nothing wrong in the level of crime in the UK. Never have and perhaps never will. If one points out that there are millions of serious crimes committed each year, including over 22,000 knife attacks and 300,000 car thefts, the BBC establishment say ‘it is only fear of crime’ that is the problem, not the actuality of it. There are only 60-odd million men women and children in the UK and most of them do not commit any serious offence. That proves that although perhaps 1:4 men may commit some sort of offence (such as speeding, causing a disturbance, or littering), the bulk of crime that people are most concerned about is committed by repeat offenders. What is clear is that there are many causes of crime, including drugs and alcohol. Many offences (and much organised crime) can be eliminated by legalising Marujana and the least damaging drugs. That would have the same effect as when alcohol prohibition ended in the USA - marginal increase in alcohol usage and far less related crime.(Alcohol is arguably a more dangerous substance.) So there are lots of ways to drastically reduce crime. The key seems to be the process of correction? Making it clear that some behaviour will not be tolerated indefinitely. Prisons do not work, either as a deterrent or a means of correcting behaviour. It is also unaffordable. Therefore, we need a means of excluding the repeat offender from society that is acceptable and affordable. This is what needs to be debated. There is much talk of having an inclusive society. What is really needed is a society that practices inclusion and exclusion appropriately, constructively and affordably. I think that crime can be dramatically reduced, but only when there are effective measures against all repeat offenders and proper mental health diagnosis and treatments. 1:4 of our prison population may be clinically, mentally unfit. This may always have been the case and may partly explain why this and previous generations often see serious crime as possibly a kind of 'sickness'. |

1 What about reclamation projects in the hinterland as a form of exclusion? For example, there are many old abandoned mining projects in the Canadian Arctic and Australian Outback that could be utilized. Escape will net you hundreds of miles of inhospitable terrain and animals. And in light of the fact that we are moving towards a global community, then there should be a wider range of environs to choose from given a conducive political environment. Cheers. |
