any dog will attack if you get between it and its food.At some point people have to learn these are not family pets and children friendly. It has been inbred to fight no matter how well trained. My prayers are with this Family

First prayers to the family. Hope the child is going to be OK. But where were the parents. A one year old doesn't know better and most dogs are defensive around their food. Mine are and they only weight five pounds. To sad a dog will be euthanized for doing what comes natural to it.

These dogs are dangerous children should never be left alone with them.Any dog is cranky about their feed dish so is this the dogs fault or just a sad accident??

Whoever was watching the girl should not have let a 1year old get that close to a dog who is eating. I have owned all type of dogs and TRUST me when i say this. ALL breeds of dogs will do this when there eating or fill as though someone is trying to take there food. It starts as a puppy, you have to make sure you put your hand in there bowl and let theme eat out your hand so they know when they get older that your not a threat. You also have to show dominance so they know your the PACK leader. Its called survival for them since dogs were not alway domesticated.

"Pitbulls are loving friendly dogs. It's all in how they are raised. They're perfectly safe."

Until they SNAP and GO OFF and attack and savage someone! Sorry, but these dogs are going to need to be regulated/banned and owners are going to have to carry special insurance. It's not worth it.

I may not approve of pits even being around children but on this one, the adults who were supposed to be in charge of the care of this child are 100% to blame, not the dog. As others have stated, any dog can be protective of its food but to allow a one year old child to even be in the same room with a pit while it is eating shows what to me should constitute criminal negligence. Hopefully whoever is responsible will be charged so the dog and the baby aren't the only ones paying for the stupidity of those in charge.

I love dogs, too, but pit bulls are a different story. They have shamelessly been bred to be agressive, and should be eradicated.

I agree with the pack leader line of thinking. The problem is, most pit bulls are not trained this way, and their agressive behavior comes out time after time, usually in a story about how some child was mauled and deformed for life.

Eradicate the breed.

maybe you need to get the whole story ---- not just the news story. the baby was in the house while the grandmother was feeding the dog OUTSIDE. the baby went out the door, which was closed, and the grandmother was trying to get to her when the dog attacked. the baby is in ICU with a broken skull and numerous stiches --- will know further as time progresses.
i too agree with pit bulls should be banned --- but all dogs react with children around.

Most importantly I pray this young child will survive this attack, she is truly innocent and non-deserving...that obviously goes without saying.
My dogs are large boxers who are quite capable of hurting someone if they wanted to. However, as a responsible pet owner we have trained them every day of their lives so they know what is right and what is wrong behavior wise. Pet owners have an obligation to train their animals, you cannot rationally blame an animal when they misbehave. They are not equiped with the ability to analyze a situation and think through what the best course of action would be. If they could we would call them humans not animals. My pets are well behaved and sweet animals, however, you NEVER turn your back on a pet. A close friend, who is a plastic surgeon, has said countless times that he has repaired an uncountable amount of injuries from animals and the majority were pit bull attacks. Therefore, it is a double-edged sword of a topic. I believe how an animal is raised dictates most of it's behavior. However, it is difficult to ignore the testimonies of a 45 year practicing plastic surgeon.
No matter how well trained your pet is, or how gentle they act they can turn on you in an instant. As with all things, perhaps using more caution and being mindful of all animals ability to be aggressive without notice would be a more sensable solution that killing off an entire breed.
