The Catholic archbishop of San Francisco proclaimed on Wednesday that statements made by a fellow archbishop who has called for the resignation of Pope Francis "must be taken seriously." In a letter to the archdiocese published on its website, the Most Rev. Salvatore J. Cordileone said that Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò - a former Vatican leader whose recent criticisms of the pope and the pope's handling of the clerical sexual abuse scandal have rocked the church - is a man of "selfless dedication" with "integrity and sincere love of the Church." Viganò charged in an 11-page letter that Pope Francis knew of allegations against Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington, five years before accepting his resignation.
