Beginning of 11-year cycle of space weather could affect GPS satellites
“If all you use GPS for is to drive to Grandma's house, it probably isn't going to matter much to you”
Memo to the U.S. military, airlines, power companies and all others who depend on global positioning satellites and, well, technology to keep life humming:
Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say that within the next few years Earth will be in a powerful astronomical cycle with enough technological consequences to create a neat scientific thriller.
Call it Space Weather .
Beginning in March, our energetic young sun will enter a 'solar minimum.' It's the sleepy beginning of an 11-year cycle in which the rate of solar storms and flares and sun spots starts out slowly, builds rapidly over about three years to a tumultuous 'solar maximum' of solar flares and eruptions and then dies down. Chicago fights surge in potholes, with GPS, after surge in weather
“We welcome the calls. Our phones are ringing off the hook.”
By noon Wednesday, Bill Haynes' Bureau of Streets crew had patched 142 potholes along Pershing Road alone.
'We'll probably [fill] 200 to 300 and use 11 tons of material by quitting time,' Haynes, a City of Chicago foreman, said as his pothole gang - two shovelers, a raker and Haynes wielding a tamping stick - walked behind a truck loaded with cold, black asphalt. Work along their assigned route was being closely monitored miles away by a computerized tracking system at the city's 'Pothole Command Center,' where Haynes' name appeared on a video screen next to an icon marking the precise location of his truck. On Wednesday, there was little opportunity for Haynes' crew to do more than 'throw and go' as the number of the pesky street craters has doubled within the last week, city officials said. Winter is officially only a few weeks old, but the Chicago region is already deep into the pothole season. 'We are fighting the battle now,' city Transportation Commissioner Thomas Byrne said at Pothole Command, located at 1501 W. Pershing Rd. For the first time during a Chicago winter, ground tire rubber is being blended into the asphalt patching mixture in the hope of extending the life span of pothole repairs, which can last anywhere from a day to a year, depending on weather conditions, wear and tear - and luck. Good fortune will be needed to prevent a record outbreak of chuckholes in Chicago-area roads this winter, transportation officials say. Some 271,000 potholes were filled last year in the city alone, up from an annual range of 200,000 to 250,000, officials said. It's way too early to predict whether 2008 will set new records, but the city is gearing up. Chicago budgets $10 million to $12 million a year for pothole repair, said Brian Steele, spokesman for the Department of Transportation. Meanwhile, Haynes' crew switched to the north side of Pershing Road, working its way toward Halsted Street where a citizen had phoned in a report of a super-sized crater in the pavement. So many potholes and so little time to fill them, all before receiving a fresh inventory of the tire-shredding, car-rattling beasts. Read more
