Little to ponder really.
A pipe dream that will fail. Newspapers in our modern day, like the typewriter and the black & white TV, are fairly functional but obsolete. It was the newspapers that lead to their own demise by going digital in the first place. They put their news online for free and that largely killed newspaper sales. They probably were aware that they would lose money on newspapers but thought they would make back more than they lose on that by the money gained from advertising. They shot themselves in the foot, double barrel and now they whine. By turning to subscription based news only will not generate revenue or save the newspaper industry. It will simply accomplish their content being offline, few pay for subscriptions and no one sees the ads so the ads get pulled. Bankruptcy. Maybe even a bail out if they can drive their business far enough into the hole. It is too late to turn back the clock and go un-digital so that people will start buying newspapers again. People no longer have time or interest for that in our rat race society. There are far too many sources of news in the world for news to be wiped off the internet to become subscription only and I would be very suspect of any conspiracy to get all news outlets to all agree to go to a subscription basis. Newspapers belong in a museum just like Murdoch and most of our elected officials belong in a retirement home or forced out to go sit on the beach in the Bahamas. |
