The authors highlight three principles to guide the study of human learning across a range of areas and ages:(1) learning is computational; (2) learning is social; and (3) learning is supported by brain circuits linking perception and action.

They foresee a time when "Social Robots" might offer personalized pedagogy tailored to the needs of each child and help track the student’s mastery of curriculum.

Q: What do you think of all that?

The biggest objection will come from teacher unions, who seem to think teaching is a voodoo art only they can do.

I think in the future students who have sex with their (robot) teachers will be more likely to make use of lubrication....

Uh aah I was thinking somewhat along parallel lines. Love and dreams would become myths in the collective memory. The 'nanny culture' would welcome the social robots after all their parenting is almost nonexistent. Marriages would not be needed for babies.. Mothers would not be needed for babies. Fathers would not be needed. Teachers would not be needed, Cash.

It would be desirable the most organized bunch of the mothers/fathers/nannies/teache rs group, the teachers, to head the fight.

I am passionate about this fight.

I can't wait to see the robot teachers having robot sex with the robot students: robot porn?

There was a film about that in the 60's called, "Sins of the Fleshopoids," I think -- sex with human teachers has been a problem in Florida -- when they saw one of the recent female perps,'bout half the males in the state tried to get back into Middle School (just politically incorrectly joking)

I have caveats. Oliver Twist also learned inside of a social context under Fagin and the gang. The term 'social' seems harmless enough but, looking around today, how many harmful things are readily learned in certain social environments?

Sesame Street is also learning in a social environment with fun, laughter and loving characters like Big Bird and Cookie Monster. Bringing those characters to life in the form of social robots could only be better, right? I am not cynical but a realist. I see danger lurking here.

Possibly one day we will have individualized learning environments for each student, maximized for their developmental level, attention span and any special needs and talents. This environment would be capable of being adjusted on a real time basis.

Classroom teachers would be facilitators, observers, advisors - all assisted by machines that would make sure benchmarks were met, work was corrected, subject mastery was achieved and that each student got the attention they needed to learn each subject. Maintaining order would also be the educator's domain.

Core subjects would be interspersed with electives, hands-on learning, physical activities, other group interaction and free choice.

Good educators will always be needed in some capacity - not that teacher's unions only support the good teachers. It's often more about the politics of the situation and people's individual egos, as is so much in life.

I can admire the pretty picture you've painted but I still envision a Brave New World subtlety here. Parents already treat public education as their legal right to a free babysitter. They look forward to having 5 days a week of quiet time. Extend this scenario into the future where classrooms are run by android social robots. Will children become emotionally attached to beautiful machines whose attachment causes unforeseen emotional conflicts? This all has the makings of a great prophetic sci-fi social saga that reality may mimic.

Social and political movements have always had a way of melding. Communism, Nationalism, racism, drug culture, religious movements that dictate governments' actions, etc. Assume for the moment that social robotics becomes the greatest, most efficacious teaching method ever devised. Imagine it in place when Hitler's Jugend (Youth) were being indoctrinated, Stalin's Communist League of Youth were being brainwashed or Michael Jackson celebrity-bots were born:)

You're probably thinking of me at this moment as some sort of conspiracy wacko who holds an unrealistic fear of the future. Or cynic. Or pessimist. But, you can't tell much about a plant by looking at the seed ... unless you've been farming all of your life and been reaping what you've sowed.

How about a nice course in automotive robotics -- so that our vehicle industry may catch up with the rest of the world's? Or would that violate some union agreement...t'would be rather ironic to have robots teach that course

Yep.. corny but..

Summer – Concerto in g-minor

Allegro non molto
Beneath the blazing sun's relentless heat
men and flocks are sweltering,
pines are scorched.
We hear the cuckoo's voice; then sweet songs of the turtle dove and finch are heard.
Soft breezes stir the air….but threatening north wind sweeps them suddenly aside. The shepherd trembles, fearful of violent storm and what may lie ahead.

Adagio e piano - Presto e forte
His limbs are now awakened from their repose by fear of lightning's flash and thunder's roar, as gnats and flies buzz furiously around.

Presto
Alas, his worst fears were justified, as the heavens roar and great hailstones beat down upon the proudly standing corn.

some good points,i lean toward this response only because most of my childhood influence and social skills were derived from mothers old ferbie collection.

My first encounter with Vivaldi stayed with me. But instead of corn field movements, I picture more of Tuscany with olive gardens, rolling vineyards and the lazy rumps of distant hills. If music doesn't stir you to create images, it becomes the sound of the Three Stooges in the orchestra pit. I'm not speaking of little ditties like the Stones Get offa My Cloud but real movements. Another one that I find full of not just imagery but a titillation of all the senses is Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring. It makes me fly slowly at low altitude with many stops to perch at briefly.

No ... I don't do drugs.

Daily Horoscope for December 20

Cancer

If you thought yesterday was fraught with tension the temperature rises a few notches again today, as Mars turns retro in your house of finances and values. What's eating you? Maybe you're annoyed because your spare time is being eroded by duties that are weighing heavily on your shoulders. You might also be miffed by the flippant attitude of a certain person who you think should be taking life a lot more seriously. Calm down or you'll blow a gasket.
