An interesting study. I especially liked the theory that "all people might be born with absolute pitch, but that a majority lose their absolute pitch abilities with age. Thus, an attractive hypothesis is that genetic factors might extend this neurodevelopmental window to a duration sufficient to intersect with the onset of musical training." All the more reason to play Brahms' Lullaby and other selections in infancy while that absolute pitch may still be in play.
The more we understand about the development and potential of humans, the more we can optimize how we all learn and use our gifts. Practice never hurts, though. That takes discipline, but I really think that my self discipline gene may be defective. Or perhaps I am just being lazy. It is awfully hot out to practice right now ... |
