Evolution: Winning in Court But Losing In Class?

In the perpetual fight over evolution in public schools, there is good news and bad news.

The good news is that supporters of science education have largely been successful in shutting down creationist attempts to undermine evolution through state legislatures and state school boards.

People object to standardization, like No Child Left Behind, but these are individual teachers teaching creationism so do we want teachers that are individuals or teachers to have Federal mandates?

Maybe they shouldn't teach either creationism or evolution in schools. Problem solved for both sides. People can believe whatever they want. This is a free country.

Kids are free to choose any scientific theory with evidence. Creationism doesn't meet that criteria.

The problem is Evolutionary theory is necessary to understand much of modern biological science.

Creationism is the collection of fairy stories packaged by the churches of the Fundamental evil to get around their unwillingness to accept the probability of metaphor in the bible.

God may have created the whole shooting match in seven of his days which could very well be two weeks ago last thursday.

The evidence for evolution may just be the tool marks of gods creation or a random series of events leading to us.

As a Christian, I'd prefer that they keep evolution and creationism OUT of the classroom altogether, and instead teach the kids how to study, research, and reason properly on their own in order to prepare them for the real world who can't do all three of those skills anymore.

If you don't believe that, look at all the @ssh*les on these boards that believe the dumbest perverse nonsense.

" Kids are free to choose any scientific theory with evidence. Creationism doesn't meet that criteria."

Erm...neither does the "scientific" THEORY of evolution! e.g. no empirical evidence whatsoever; but a whole lot of belief/faith statements: "Mother Nature did..." (as opposed to "Father God" one supposes).

One should remember (if one ever knew it) that Darwin gave his criteria for validating his theory: fossil evidence linking species. No one has found 'em yet, therefore...(claims to the contrary are a lot of wishful thinking!)

Creationism is belief, it shouldn't be taught in school, it should be taught in church. There is no science in Creationism.

Evolution has a mountain of evidence and is the best scientific explanation for the changes we see in populations of organisms. It is a sound scientific theory and should be in science class.

I agree about teaching the basic research and study skills.

THough I agree that many ignorantly diss religion - yet don't know ******ck they're talkin bout.(Though many Xtians don't as well...)

IT'S JUST F_CKING SCIENCE; LIKE LOGIC, MATH, AND OTHER THINGS, IT DEALS WITH THE TRUTH, WITH REALITY.

On evolution:

THere has been documented evolution.

So it's a valid theory, not a hypothesis.

Sience isn't what we call "religion"; you can't freaking deal in facts.

Science is all about the logical use of probability.

Define "fact". Something someone TOLD you?

Something you've READ?

Science isn't THE truth, it's the red pill.

Despite what you claim, there is quite a bit of documented evidence for the Theory of Evolution. It has nothing to do with belief. Those that use belief statements to describe the ToE don't know what they are talking about.

There is fossil evidence linking species, just not the type most are looking for. Most don't want to see the gradual change over time, they want to see the "old" to "new" change. It is easy to trace the modern day horse back to it ancient ancestors as well as modern day whales to their ancestors. We have ample fossil evidence for them both. We also have fossil evidence for the transition from dinosaur to bird. There is quite a bit more, too many to list.

Why waste the time on psuedo science? I thought teachers were perpetually in short supply anyway.

This takes a toll on time, money and critical thinking skills.

Shall we teach them Voodoo spells also?

While Biology used to be a slightly more...intuitive discipline than the other sciences, it is now firmly in the 21st century, we know a great deal and we can use that knowledge to do some very useful things. However standards of 'proof' in each discipline will always be different, as the following joke illustrates:

3 scientists are on a train passing through Scotland, a mathematician, a physicist and a biologist. As they slide past one particular field they see a black sheep grazing parallel to the train tracks.

The biologist says to his friends "will you look at that gentlemen, Sheep in scotland are black!"

The Physicist corrects him; "my dear Sir, from this evidence we can only determine that in Scotland SOME sheep are black".

The mathematician takes his pipe from his mouth and declares "friends, all we really know is that in Scotland there exists ONE sheep which is black on at least ONE SIDE"

But the fact that this is a free country bothers the atheists, who would vote to have your children taken away if you teach them a religion the athiests disagree with.
