How can a news center in New Orleans know what heckling is in Appalachia? I find there were strong opinions but to charge those whose very jobs are at stake with heckling is rediculous. What if they were to say you folks had to move out of the natural swamps and water lowlands in Louisiana there news crew would you not be upset as well? I believe your story headline should read thousands of miners finally have a hearing point for their side of the story. Or civil disobedience has led the environmentalist to see mining is supported in Appalachia. Or take a mans job and risk our nations prosperity.

Mountaintop removal lets them get out of paying more people to mine the regular way from my understanding, I would think these guys would prefer to have more jobs mining. I get sick when I see a "reclaimed" mountain. My dad was a coal miner and I talked to him about it, he said it's the greedy coal companies screwing people. I don't think it's a coincidence that they had that big "friends of coal" rally on the same day as the UMWA thing. Seems like friends of coal = enemies of miners. That's just how I viewed it. Of course they would prefer to be cheap and pay less people by destroying the mountains, that doesn't mean they should get to do whatever they want.

When out of state protesters trespass and chain their self to equipment, they call themselves patriots. When coal miners speak up in a public forum, they are called thugs and hecklers.Whats wrong with this picture?

The key word is "they". "They", the so-called environmentalists, call themselves whatever "they" feel deemed appropriate. "They" are in NO means "patriots". "They" are outlaw terrorists who continue breaking the law and putting lives in danger with their disregard for safety. "They" are nothing more than "thugs" and "hecklers" - staging their sit-ins and lock-downs, trespassing on privately owned land, screaming and chatting outside/inside state buildings, littering... Truly disgusting! Keep standing tall, miners! You have many supporters!

No I wasn't there,I had to work. But I was invited.I guess when you talk about "equipment operators" you're talking about me.No,I don't work for Massey, not affiliated in any way.I am a southern WV.UMWA surface miner.I understand the UMWA was represented well by Mr.Grant Crandall.Yes I am a resident of WV.I am classified a coal miner by the state and the federal government.Other miners and me make a living abiding by the laws put before us.We have to take tests and receive training to be classified as a miner here.I doubt that you could even begin to do our job safely. One other thing deep miners are equipment operators too.The days of pick and shovel are long gone.So I guess you are just another ignorant tree hugger that has no idea what you're talking about!

I don't know much about the whole story, but it sounds like it was just a protest. If the protesters were from Greenpeace, then yeah, I could see how they might be terrorists. Greenpeace has a terrible track record. And littering? Really? Seems kind of counterproductive for an environmentalist.

While I believe there are better ways to extract minerals these companies are abiding by the laws of the land unlike the extremist who tresspass and endanger men and womens lives going onto private property. These miners pay income taxes and property taxes in West Virginia unlike your facists friends who organize and take advantage of the communities around them.

How about self-proclaimed environmentalists who are still on the grid! Hmmm......

And as far as being "on the grid," it's very difficult to just completely convert everything to solar, wind, etc. The initial investment is pretty expensive. Personally, I'd love to see more nuclear power plants. 20 years ago, it was very dangerous. But with today's technology, I believe it to be the cheapest, safest form of energy (on a massive scale anyway) available.

So, I don't really know a lot about the coal industry. What is the advantage of strip mining vs deep mining?
