In multiracial Hawaii, Obama faced discrimination

“I thought it was true. And in many ways it was until it became more personal.”

Growing up as a young man of mixed race, Barack Obama benefited from the spirit of tolerance that defined Hawaii's racial climate.

His childhood in the country's idealized melting pot was far from painless, though.

As part of the islands' small group of black Americans in the 1970s, he encountered racism and struggled to form a black identity.

Obama's experience in Hawaii is echoed by other blacks, including some of his schoolmates, and challenges the state's vaunted image of racial harmony. Read more

Discrimination is always a concept "institutionally" assigned to blacks. Now, the press puts discrimination & blacks together with Hawaii. There is an ulterior motive when bringing Blacks & discrimination together with Hawaii. The intended result would most likely be some sort of accomodation for Haoles.
Perhaps there is a try to reduce reluctance to develop Hawaii's landbase to accomodate more buyers from the Continent. Calling it discriminatory to not develop property for real estate sales.
Discrimination is the grey area, by unanimous consent where 2 foreign cultures meet. In Hawaii, where foreign cultures and their generations interact, discrimination would define the area one culture or the other culture is distinct. Take the Filipino food item "balut". This is a distinctly Filipino item. This would not be discrimination when one culture eats this and another culture does not. There are many other examples with other cultures where this point is illustrated. Discrimination somehow implies hatred. Again, all are welcomed to participate in this food item consumption, hatred set aside.

Anyone recall that segregated military part of Fort Shafter of the late 40's to 50's? That would have been the base for creation of the Black identity in Hawaii. Creation of the Black identity would not have been a struggle here in Hawaii. The only struggle again would have been trying to gain entry into a "whites" only dinner club.
The main discussion would be how would one of Color be able to enjoy entry into a "whites" only club.

You would think so, to read some of these forum discussions, but I'm still not sure I "know" Hawaii is the most racist state. Somehow I doubt it. But I'm curious. Any evidence or source for your opinion? Have you personally studied the level of racism in every state? Or have you merely asked "everybody" about racism in Hawaii?

Hawaii is not the most racist state in the Union. There is some racism against whites, but it is pretty mild. Whites, however, unused being discriminated against in any fashion whatsoever, magnify their experiences into something far worse than it really is.

The racism against whites in Hawaii is not the kind of racism whites practice against other minorities. For example, in Hawaii, whites are not discriminated in the workforce. In other words, whites are not turned down for work because they are white. To the contrary, they are often hired for management positions because they are perceived to be bright and competent. They are also, for example, elected into office (Hawaii's governor is white). In short, while whites may recived the occasional "damn haole" when they cut in front of someone on the freeway, or make an incredibly inappropriate comment to the wrong person, in all serious matters, discrmination against whites is negligible.

but, thank goodness, we've come a long way.

have you ever taken a close look at the old cemeterys in Hawaii ?

until recently, non-white Catholics were prohibited by the Catholic church from being buried on consecrated ground. for me, that was an eye-opener.

racism is ubiquitous, and segregation runs deep, even in death. so, don't expect life to be much different.

however, we are moving forward at breakneck glacial speed.

It is quietly hoped for; among those in Hawaii, that he shows traits of his Hawaii upbrining in his dealings with the Nation and the World. We will feel very proud to have been of influence through Barak Obama.

Long ago, there were exclusive Catholic cemeteries like the one on King Street near Straub Clinic and Hospital. The bishop consecrated the cemetery for sacred use, meaning that only baptized Catholics or catechumens were allowed to be interred. In the history of the Catholic church in Hawaii, there is not one instance of what you allude to in you statement that "non-white Catholics were prohibited by the Catholic church from being buried on consecrated ground." The church in Hawaii did not make distinctions between white and non-white. If you walk through the King Street Catholic cemetery, you will see a cross section of all races, social classes buried in its grounds. This would include former white merchant seamen, missionary bishops and priests and religious, native Hawaiians (Congressional Delegate Robert Wilcox), Tahitians (Princess Summers), Portuguese, Filipinos, Puerto Ricans, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese and Koreans. Non Catholics would not have been buried in a Catholic cemetery, but all races and social strata were interred.

Honestly, I think Obama will not do anything for our Hawai'i. If elected as president his main focus would be on the war, and of course all those other haole states out there.

Go look at the classifies in Hawaii in the 40s to 60s.

APARTMENT: For Japanese male only.
HOUSE FOR RENT: Japanese. 3/2bath in palolo.

Racism has always been alive an well in Hawaii. It's just a bit more hidden and back stabbing in nature.

And blacks get some of the worst treatment.

The Asian ladies who decide not to enter an elevator because a black man is in it.

The Asian lady who holds on to her purse tighter because a Black man approaches the bus stop.

You know the routine.

not to diminish your observations; but, the signs which read " dogs and chinese, keep off the grass" were all too common-place back then.

Obama threw Hawaii under the bus in his book, hell what discrimination did he get at Punahou? Please, really? In articles he was well accepted per his friends and very popular. He threw the entire state and then his Grandmother under the bus.
