Losing racehorses in Puerto Rico condemned to die
“A lot of times people will have good luck with one horse, that horse will make them a lot of money, and they feel they can do that with every horse”
For thoroughbred racehorses in Puerto Rico, success can be a matter of life and death. Many losers don't make it off the racetrack grounds alive.
More than 400 horses, many in perfect health, are killed each year by lethal injection at a clinic tucked behind the Hipodromo Camarero racetrack, chief veterinarian Jose Garcia told The Associated Press after checking clinic log books going back seven years.
Unlike on the U.S. mainland, where many former racehorses are retrained for riding or sent to special refuges, the animals have few options in this U.S. Caribbean territory. Owners say caring for and feeding a losing racehorse is too expensive. Read more

The HSUS Facts on US Horse Slaughter
***Which kinds of horses are slaughtered? Horses slaughtered include (losing race horses) lame or ill, riding school, camp horses, pergnant mares, foals -"byproducts" of (PMU), drug Premarin®. Ponies, mules, donkeys as well. HSUS investigators witnessed horses purchased for slaughter in good health, bought for a few hundred dollars. Horses of all ages & breeds are slaughtered, from draft to miniatures. ********** ***How many horses are slaughtered each year? (Tens of thousands) of live horses are transported across the border to Mexico and Canada for slaughter. ********** ***Who eats horse meat? The largest markets are France, Belgium, Holland, Japan, and Italy. ********** ***How do unwanted, surplus horses end up at slaughterhouses? Most horses destined for slaughter are sold at livestock auctions or sales. Often, terrified horses and ponies are crammed together and transported to slaughter in double-deck trucks designed for cattle and pigs. Some horses arrive at the slaughterhouse seriously injured or dead. ********** ***How are the horses killed? Highly alert horses are stabbed multiple times in the neck with "puntilla knife" to sever spinal cords. The horse is conscious, is "not" stunning method. It paralyzes, leaving horses twitching on the ground, unable to move or breathe, death from suffocation or blood loss & dismemberment. With US export of horses to slaughter over 300%, undercover footage shows live horses dragged, whipped, crammed in trucks in 110 tmp to a horrific form of slaughter in MX & CN. Conditions in slaughterhouses—stressful & extremely frightening. ********** ***What is The Humane Society of the United States doing to protect horses? The HSUS continues to assist states in passage of effective laws to govern treatment of horses sold for slaughter within their borders. __________ More Facts on Horse Slaughter: http://www.hsus.org/horses_equines/issues/get... |

Racehorse Rescuer-Saved Tchaikovsky, grandson of Secretariat-
"Slaughters Haunt Overwhelm Me" By JOHN BRANCH Published: May 17, 2008 COOKSTOWN, N.J.— A thoroughbred named Tchaikovsky, a grandson of Secretariat, was having a tooth pulled in one stall. A horse in another was given a sponge bath. Out the stable door, about a dozen horses shared a sun-lit field. Skip to next paragraph Multimedia Audio Slide Show Life After Racing Somewhere, far out of sight if not entirely out of mind, countless other former racehorses were on their way to being slaughtered. “I struggle with it,” Diana Koebel said. She is the owner and trainer here at LumberJack Farm, one of hundreds of horse farms around the country helping rescue and rehabilitate thoroughbreds considered too slow or damaged to be worth anything more than horse meat. The rescuers cannot keep up. “Are we really helping?” Koebel asked as she stood in a stable stall.“I know we are, and every one counts, but it’s overwhelming at points. Can we really fix this industry?” LumberJack Farm works with a nonprofit organization called ReRun, which prepares discarded racehorses for a second career — as jumping show horses, maybe, or just as pets — and then makes them available for adoption. ReRun annually places about 40 thoroughbreds once destined for the slaughterhouse. Read Full Story: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/17/sports/othe... |

Imagine yourself inside this slaughterhouse!
You are seeing what the horses go through as they approach their violent death. You first spot the horses in a holding pen, standing depressed and confused on the slippery concrete floors. Suddenly, they're moved to a chute and lined up facing what's called the "kill box." Now, depression has turned to terror. What you see is unmistakable. The horses are trembling violently and urinating on themselves. The horse has an acute sense of hearing and smell, well beyond human development. The smell of death is palpable and the horses are reacting with panic and fear. They clearly perceive they are next in line for horrific pain and death. You see the horse; you've been following, funneled into the death trap. A slaughterhouse worker wields a mechanical instrument. Suddenly, the man brings it down with force on the horse's skull. It is a retractable bolt that fractures the horse's skull, but doesn't always render the animal senseless. The horse's bone fragments are driven into the animal's brain along with the bolt. The terror and pain the horse experiences at this moment are unimaginable. The aim of the bolt is NOT to kill the horse, but just to immobilize the animal with the force of the blow. The horse collapses either on the first, second or the third blow. The horse falls onto a conveyer belt, where one hind leg is entrapped in a device that lifts the horse in the air UPSIDE DOWN...STILL ALIVE!!! This device hangs the horse, it's head dangling toward the floor, STILL ALIVE, and then it's THROAT IS CUT OPEN, so the blood will drain out until the animal's heart beats for the last time. They're bled to death, which is what is required for the horsemeat to be certified for human consumption. |

Humane Society of the United States
Watch the Undercover Footage and Take Action!! --Watch our undercover footage of U.S. horses exported to Mexico for slaughter—then take action. Fed 2007 https://community.hsus.org/campaign/FED_2007_... ********** How are the horses killed? Under federal law, horses are required to be rendered unconscious prior to slaughter, usually with a device called a captive bolt gun, which shoots a metal rod into the horse's brain. Prior to the closure of the U.S. horse slaughter plants, it was not uncommon for horses to be improperly stunned and conscious when they were hoisted by a rear leg to have their throats cut. With the export of horses to slaughter increasing more than 300 percent, undercover footage shows live horses being dragged, whipped, and crammed into trucks in 110 degrees on their way to a horrific form of slaughter in Mexico and Canada. These horses are stabbed multiple times in the neck with a "puntilla knife" to sever their spinal cords. This procedure does not render the horse unconscious, and is not a stunning method. Rather, it paralyzes the horse, leaving him/her twitching on the ground, unable to move or breathe, and then they die from suffocation (because their lungs stop working) or from blood loss and dismemberment. Conditions in the slaughterhouse—inside and outside of our borders—are stressful and extremely frightening for horses. |
