San Diego Fire Maps & Info

UPDATED: Links to Maps from LATimes, NASA and other sources are included on Mapping The Southern California Fires by Danny Sullivan.

PBS and two other talented individuals have created two very good maps of areas effected by the fire. They are currently up to date, but use them with a grain of salt as to accuracy.

While 8 may have high winds it is calm in Imperial County. There is space for large animals at the Imperial County Fair grounds in Imperial. There are numerous holels which have rooms available in Imperial County.

Why is I-8 East closed? I can't see any danger there on the fire maps.

Should the mission trails area start to worry about the Wild cat canyon fires or/and the witch fire coming down from Scrips Ranch?

This is an open letter to LPL Management from a
concerned citizen:
The Mayor of San Diego and the Governor of California
are urging people to stay home from work, stay off of
the highways, and stay indoors.
Yet LPL, a national corporation with several home
office locations, still requires many hundreds of its
non-evacuated employees to report to work in the La
Jolla UTC area as long as they "feel comfortable"
doing so. Indeed, what employee who has yet to be be
evacuated from their home would even "feel
comfortable" calling their manager to say they won't
be coming into today -- while knowing how much worse
many others have it. LPL's handling of this matter --
leaving the decision on whether to report up to the
employee -- has, in effect, left employees with no
choice at all.
I'll once again call your attention to what the Mayor
has requested time and time again.
"Mayor Sanders is reminding people to please stay home
today, stay off the freeways, and off cell phones."
(KPBS Web).
And yet, this request must somehow not apply to LPL.
Do you realize you are located 1 1/2 miles south of
the mandatory evacuation line? That you are largely
surrounded by undeveloped open land ripe with dry
brush? And forecasters are calling for unpredictable
winds with the possibility of necessitating immediate
emergency evacuations?
Oh, right, "my bad," there is money to be made.
Many of your employees have been displaced. That is
no excuse to put those who have been more fortunate
back into harms way. Fortunately, I'm not suggesting
that flames are threatening LPL, at least not at the
moment. I am saying that the air quality is
horrendous, government is pleading for your
cooperation, yet LPL apparently remains focused only
on the bottom line.
I will be submitting this letter to the local media to
set an example. Businesses need to close to allow
emergency crews to do their best to save as many
homes, lives, and other businesses as possible. Gee,
sure hope you don't get burned in the process -- I
mean that figuratively, of course.

As an example to other business out there I just wanted to say that both San Diego Sherwin-Williams automotive branches have closed today and asked there employees to stay home with love ones, today October 23, as well as yesterday October 22. I believe all other non-essential business should follow Sherwin-Williams example and close their doors for today.

The San Diego Reference Labratory is yet another business that is more concerned with making money than with the turmoil in its employees lives right now. Today less than half the staff reported to work, and those who did go in are only there for fear of reprimand by the management. However, the owner of the company himself chose to stay home (but the employees are still told to be there if they can).

This is a forensic toxicology lab - basically they test pee samples for traces of drugs. Does that sound like an "essential" job to any of you?

To make matters worse, they are located in Mira Mesa, very close to the Scripps Ranch evacuations. Not only are they putting their employees lives in danger (coming in to a building where they can't hear outside news, and CANNOT receive reverse 91 calls), but they are also disregarding the pleas to stay off the roads and in our homes if our jobs are not essential.

What kind of people are most concerned with making money in a time of crisis like this??

IIRC, Witnesses reported downed power lines near Witch Creek. There has been trouble with downed power lines and "exploding transformer boxes" (I think that's what they said) across the county.
The Poomacha fire started as a structural fire.
Mostly, I'm guessing officials are more concerned with trying to contain the fires than trying to pin down the exact cause right now.

Travature, like many San Diego based companies, has had to temporarily close their office. To keep track of the changing news, we've quickly thrown together a San Diego Fire Mashup. It includes a Flickr photo stream of the 100 most recent photos of the fire, two of the local blog news feeds (KPBS and Signonsandiego), and the KPBS Google Map of the Fire Area.
