Miscavige's reign of terror over Scientology

Brutalised staff who defected from the Church have given an insight into how its leader maintains control

By Coline Covington

It was random and whimsical. It could be the look on your face. Or not answering a question quickly. But it always was a punishment." Mike Rinder, a Scientology spokesman for many years, described to the St Petersburg Times the perverse regime of its leader, David Miscavige. Top executives from the Church have been defecting and, along with Rinder, have reported Miscavige's "gruesome" assaults and abusive behaviour towards his management team.

Scientology Trial Ends in Paris; Verdict Expected in September

PARIS, France (CNN) -- Wednesday marked the last day of a three-week trial in Paris in which the Church of Scientology stood accused of fraud.

If found guilty, the church could be forced to shut down in France, though appeals could let the case continue for years.

Closing arguments were made Wednesday, two days after the prosecution asked for a dissolution of both the church and its Paris bookstore, and fines of 2 million euros ($2.8 million).

A verdict is expected in September.

The abuse behind Scientology's facade - St. Petersburg Times

In recent years the Church of Scientology worked hard to present a kinder, gentler image to the public, claiming it had cast aside the criminal activities, dirty tricks and abusive behavior of the past that brought it widespread condemnation and sent some of its former leaders to prison.

But a St. Petersburg Times special report this week revealed the reality behind the new facade: At its core, the Church of Scientology has not changed. It is an organization that uses intimidation and brutality to control its employees, places financial ambition above spiritual service to its members and stops at nothing to undermine its critics

Scientologists Continue Cover Up of Suicide

In my last blog I reported on the death of Steve Brackett, a Scientologist who committed suicide over money trouble.

Rank and file Scientologists have decided to lie about Brackett’s death by saying he died in a head-on collision. This is being done to protect the belief system of Scientology, as it is believed by Scientologists that Brackett possessed supernatural abilities due to his achieving the church’s exalted state of OT

Norwegian government considers prosecuting Scientology

Sunday, May 31, 2009

The Norwegian Ministry of Health and Care Services is considering prosecuting and banning some Scientology practices, in particular the use of the Scientology personality test to sell courses.

State Secretary Rigmor Aasrud said that the activities in question might be prosecuted as fraud or as violations of existing healthcare regulations. A Norwegian Member of Parliament (MP) whose daughter killed herself after taking such a test, supports the idea of prosecuting illegal practices rather than trying to ban the movement as a whole.

AU Senator says it's time to re-examine Scientology's claims as a religion

The church of Scientology is fighting one of the biggest battles in its 50-year history.

Federal senator Nick Xenophon says it's time to re-examine Scientology's claims as a religion and to change the laws to force the group to start paying tax.

"We need to have a close look at those laws because I think there's a lot of community concern that an organisation such as Scientology gets the huge benefits of having the tax exempt status as a religion," Senator Xenophon said.

Historically Scientology brands anyone who questions their organisation a religious bigot.

"This is not about religious bigotry, this is about accountability and I think it's pretty cowardly of an organisation to start accusing those that just want to question they way they operate, to make sure what they do is transparent, accountable and fair," Senator Xenophon said.

As always, the church of Scientology declined a request to be interviewed.

Wikipedia bans Church of Scientology editors

Exclusive: In an unprecedented effort to crack down on self-serving edits, the Wikipedia supreme court has banned contributions from all IP addresses owned or operated by the Church of Scientology and its associates.

According to evidence turned up by admins in this long-running Wikiland court case, multiple editors have been "openly editing [Scientology-related articles] from Church of Scientology equipment and apparently coordinating their activities." Leaning on the famed WikiScanner, countless news stories have discussed the editing of Scientology articles from Scientology IPs, and some site admins are concerned this is "damaging Wikipedia's reputation for neutrality."
