Full story: Columbus Dispatch

Mennonites should be more accepting of gay and lesbian members, according to a campaign being waged by some members during the denomination's national conference in Columbus this week.

I dont believe it. do you know what male gay sex is? Do you think the mennonites know, or do you think the gays just kneel around praying all day.

Unless they're having sex in your yard, it's really none of your business. Yes, they have sex, so does everyone else. THAT is not what makes someone gay, nor is it anyone else's business, NOR is it a sin. Why ARE homophobes so obsessed with gay sex?

What the Mennonites know is that Jesus told us to treat others with love, and if you think a church with a "no gays allowed" sign, either real or perceived, is following Jesus you're badly mistaken. This decision was a Christian act of love.

Didnt he say marriage is between a man and a woman. Im not debating what Jesus said. You called me a homophobe. No, its none of your business what I am. Its still a free country. More permissive, less moral, but still a free country.

I am also always amazed to see that people are still ignorant enough to equate being gay, lesbian, or bisexual with only sexual acts. Throughout history specific Bible passages have been used by humans to defend domestic violence, child abuse, genocide, etc. which we generally agree now is not okay.

I look forward to the day when more people can look at the big picture of Jesus, the Bible, and the world instead of picking through everything to find one thing to defend bigoted opinions. If you look hard enough at religious texts you can find something to defend almost any opinion you want to claim is Christian.

The Mennonite Church is definitely moving in the right direction!

CHUCKO--"Didnt he say marriage is between a man and a woman."

He did NOT say ONLY between a man and a woman, it was NEVER said that gays cannot marry.

"Im not debating what Jesus said. You called me a homophobe. No, its none of your business what I am."

Your words tell us all that you're a homophobe, and this bigotry is destroying lives and causing massive amounts of suffering for no good reason at all, and it's even WORSE when you blaspheme and insult our Lord and Savior by pretending this dangerous and destructive homophobia is somehow "Christian."

"Its still a free country. More permissive, less moral, but still a free country."

There's nothing "permissive" about this. People don't choose to be gay. There were JUST as many gay people 300 or 3000 years ago as there were now. We're less ignorant.

And there's NOTHING moral about your bigotry. Not a bit. Equality is moral. Loving others, even those different from you, is moral.

Yeah, it's a free country, you're as free to be homophobic as you are to be racist. But it's still wrong.

When one accepts the realization that they are living a life of sin, according to the teaching of Jesus, and turn from our sin and trust in His Gospel, His Truth,
then acceptance into a congreation of Christians is welcomed.
This is basically the same in all Christian faiths, from Catholic to Baptist to Methodist.
The Mennoites have always been my neighbors, fellow worker and friend.
Don't be weakened by the pluristic society of todays world. Hold firm in your Faith, run the race, win the reward our Lord has in wait for you.

The Word is so misconstrued anymore, and if not misconstrued watered down. Sin is sin and we should boldly proclaim that. This does not mean that we should shun all sinners because God certainly did not shun us. However, we should have the compassion to call sin what it is, in a loving, christian manner. Always with the goal of pointing people to a better relationship with God through his word and prayer.

This is not the will of The Lord . This is more of the let's just get along no matter what. Homosexuality is wrong ,it was wrong in the old testament and it is wrong now.
That being said I'm sure that I will be roundly criticized by folks who think I should get with the new morality. By the way I spell that immorality when I speak of it.

Joe Byler--"This is not the will of The Lord ."

Of course it is. God said to love one another, and homophobia is NOT following this.

"This is more of the let's just get along no matter what."

No, it's Christian love. It is NOT get along NO MATTER WHAT, it's get along when nobody's being hurt and something isn't a sin.

"Homosexuality is wrong ,"

A preposterous and bigoted lie. It most certainly is NOT.

"it was wrong in the old testament and it is wrong now."

It is never mentioned in the old testament, or the new testament. It's not chosen. It's not something you do, it's something you are. It harms nobody. It's not "wrong."

"That being said I'm sure that I will be roundly criticized by folks who think I should get with the new morality."

Nothing new about it, your bigotry was wrong 1000 years ago. It was NEVER OK for churches to slam the door in peoples' faces.

"By the way I spell that immorality when I speak of it."

And your bigotry and hate are immoral. There's NOTHING immoral about being gay, or about churches welcoming ALL as Jesus told us to. Jesus didn't say "love your neighbor, with the following exceptions:" He said "Love your neighbor, end of discussion."

Yeah. And Davey Crocket killed a bear when he was only three; Cinderella went to the ball in a magic pumpkin carriage; and Jonah lived inside a whale.

Economic issues matter and marriage is an economic issue. Studies show that married people are slightly healthier (less costs) and wealthier (pay more taxes) than their single counterparts and this is true for gay people as well. Therefore, it is in the state's best economic interest to grant marriage equality. This is because there are thousands of rights and responsibilities that come with the legal contract of marriage (yes, marriage is a legal contract and gay people deserve these contract rights).

There has been a huge amount of progress for the GLBT community this year... Marriage is now legalized in Maine, NH and Iowa! Both Republicans and Democrats are endorsing marriage equality, one by one. Heck, even Dick Cheney reassured us that he supports marriage equality.

There are religions that are becoming more and more accepting of homosexuality. Gay families are more visible and openly gay politicians are getting elected to offices.

Folks, please do not focus on the "bob's" of the world. His kind is dying a much faster death than we could have ever imagined 2 yrs ago.

Bob,

for Pete's sake, the word is spelled "homosexual," not "homosextual" as you write over and over! If you want to rant you could at least spell correctly. Otherwise don't expect anyone with a brain to give your ignorant opinions a second thought.

Bob,

why this total obsession with homosexuality? You're not only ignorant, you're clearly very insecure as well.
