According to some of the earliest jewish writings, (older than the torah) satan is one of the good guys.

USED to be one of the good guys. He was Lucifer, the covering cherub then pride formed in him because of his beauty and he fell and became satan.

Thanks - I mostly posted it because it opens up the whole topic of "popular religion" as opposed to biblical and traditional Christianity.

What many Christians fail to realize is that:

1-American Christianity owes as much, probably more, to American Culture than to biblical and traditional Christianity, and

2-Most people who self-identify as Christians do so as a result of our culture rather than any kind of allegiance to biblical and traditional Christianity.

I find it rather disingenuous for Fundamentalists, especially, are quick to claim the Founding Fathers were Christian when Fundamentalists would condemn most of them as heretics if they were here on Topix (etc) and claim a Christian majority in America, when Fundamentalists would, also, condemn most of those who self-identify as Christians in any other context.
