Atheists' problem with the Bible

Full story: www.jamaica-gleaner.com

Christians recite biblical texts to justify their moral positions, but is the Bible a good guide to morality? Sure, there are some select passages regularly quoted about loving our neighbours, doing good to even enemies, looking after the poor, etc, but are there many passages which preachers conveniently ignore and about which many Christians are ignorant?

If you want a story where everyone does everything right then read Bambi. Real life includes the sinful nature of man and is not pretty. The bible is a book of truth therefore the good and the bad has to both be told.

Lot's daughters's story is just one side of the story told in the Bible just to remind us that there is always an evil who try to make us doing something evil. It's right that the story ought to be included in the Bible but not meant for us to follow blindy if moral is the paramount objective to believe in God.

Book of truth??? Really?? So then pi = 3, bats are birds, insects have 4 legs and rabbits chew the cud? The earth is flat, snakes and donkeys speak and bushes spontaneously combust? If you believe that, then you must believe that a boy can climb a beanstalk into the sky to retrieve a golden-egg-laying goose from a giant, that a wolf can eat a grandmother and her granddaughter and then both of them can spring from his belly, once killed by a kindly old woodsman, that three pigs can build three different houses, one from straw, one from sticks and one from bricks.. and that a wolf can blow two of those houses down.

In short, you believe that faerie-tales are true... and I have some swampland in Arizona to sell you, and I'll throw in a bridge at half price.

The story of Lot and his daughters is just proof that females are expendable in the eyes of Christians. Not that I would condone the rape of an angel, mind, but offering up one's own daughters as fodder and then having biblical "history" make light of the violation as if it's perfectly all right only reinforces the image that Christianity sees women as a whole as expendable creatures to be used.

We also forget not that according to the bible, women who are raped must marry their rapists.

"Book of truth"? No, a book of mythology, relevant only to those who are Christian. It is also not binding on anyone else, and shouldn't be quoted as though it is.

Just have to love the way some use it to condemn a woman's right to choose, when nowhere in that 'book of truth' does it say that a woman cannot choose to end her own pregnancy. Nowhere.

Nope, not even the commandments. The original commandments, given by Yahweh to the Jews, stated though shalt not murder, not kill. And at the time it was written, the unborn was not even considered a life. Life began with first breath. To say it was a sin to kill would be stupid, as we kill all the time. In fact, Yahweh ORDERED his followers to kill, sometimes whole towns which INCLUDED those fetuses you people seem to think he finds so important.

Obviously, the commandment doesn't apply to the unborn no matter which version you use, the original, or the Christian misinterpretation.

So, again, there is nothing in the bible that says a woman cannot choose to end her own pregnancy.

In this worst case, it was Lot's daughters who indulged their drunken father without permission or without the knowledge of their father.

When they can call their hateful "god" down to speak for himself, I might consider following him...but only if he gives me reason to believe I'm truly inferior due to my gender. Until then, Christians can keep their souls and their worries and their ISSUES to themselves and keep them the fuck off my body, thank you.

When did I say I didn't? We're discussing the bible, not Deity. There's no need to deflect just because you cannot answer my points.

Well, that's YOUR opinion of it, and I don't share that view. To me, the bible is a work of collective FICTION, and lousy fiction at that. Mostly stuff from horror flicks, none of which I'd want to spend my time reading.

If I want good fiction, I'll choose something else, and if I want facts, I'll read a non-fiction book. The bible is NOT worthwhile reading material, which is why it's not in my house.

Sorrrrry I am out of topic. One may fack and fack until the belly bulging many times and terminate the fetus inside anytime if not wanted. It would such a pity for the fetus which has just inherited the soul of its' mom.

I'm sorry, but what the hell does that even mean? People don't get knocked up from "facking" and there's usually a male involved in conception. Do you think women reproduce asexually or something?

A science textbook is very often a book of many truths: Within its wonderful pages you'll find worked proofs butressed with irrefutable evidence.

The bible is a book of fables based on the inane ramblings of late Iron Age goat herders.

Show me the truth in your bible supported by whatever undeniable evidence you have.

Nope. Not possible. Even Jesus's mother did it with the invisible God. We got to believe that God could marry any woman He loves.

Hi Khatru: You have not read the bible from cover to cover starting at the front and going all the way through. Put your prejudice aside and actually read the bible, and remember you are not reading yesterdays newspaper.

Daily Horoscope for December 26

Scorpio

Something that you've always taken for granted or believed implicitly could have a big question mark hanging over it during the next few weeks. The more entrenched your views are about this, the more difficult it will be to accept that perhaps it's time for a change of opinion or, at the very least, a revaluation of what you think. Mercury turns retro in your house of communications, so do your best to be open-minded now.
