Anti-Christian bumper sticker sparks response

“I don't want you to follow Christians. I want you to follow Jesus.”

Sometimes I just have to grump. One of the last straws was a bumper sticker spied by a friend: 'So many Christians, so few lions.' You know: they used to feed Christians to lions. via Palladium-Item

No, actually they didn't. That's a myth started by Christians so they could feel persecuted. Do a little research!

Doesn't really matter in the context of the sticker. It's wrong to display a desire for the harm of others.

Actually since there is no source that supports the claim, you are asking me to prove a negative. Why would there be a historical record of nothing happening?

The best I can tell you is "The Catholic Church today claims the Colosseum as a shrine to the Christian martyrs they say were fed to the lions ... though some historians dispute this popular image." (http://www.tickitaly.com/gall eries/colosseum-rome-italy.php )

And the only recorded Christian who was 'supposedly' fed to the lions was Justin Martyr, which is where we get the concept of a martyr.

Nero, always a man desparate to be popular, therefore looked for scapegoats on whom the fire could be blamed. He found it in an obscure new religious sect, the Christians.
And so many Christians were arrested and thrown to the wild beasts in the circus, or they were crucified . Many of them were also burned to death at night, serving as 'lighting' in Nero's gardens, while Nero mingled among the watching crowds.

That's pretty standard fare in every Western Civilization text I've read or taught from. You got a source that disagrees? Let's see it.

As for the bumper sticker....FUNNY!!! It's wrong, but it's still funny. I won't be buying one, but I can take a joke.

Yes, I'm an atheist, but I also would say it's wrong. I've seen it before and just thought of it as sick humor. My bad ... not very sensitive of me on that. But I really can't believe it is serious.

I was just scanning through some of my daughter's college cultural anthropology and history books and cannot find a reference. I took religious studies in college myself, and was taught that it was no where near as rampant as the Catholic tradition indicated, but have never found ANY good reference to pin down any specificity.

If you have something specific, I would really like to know.

I should have said I cannot find a reference that speaks to it one way or the other. I already cited the references I found through a cursory Google search (not filtered by bias, I assure you). As I said, I would love to find specifics one way or the other.

Start with the 12 Ceasars for a good broad overview. Pay particular attention to Nero and Trajan. Trajan openly says that persecuting Christians is not a good idea, so long as they swear allegiance to the state. Nero's persecutions are pretty bad.

Also check out the bibliography and track down some of the sources used. Many are pretty good. I looked into it a while back, but am a little rusty on Roman history.

Too much time teaching Western Civ II and US History!
