Overwhelming majority of Anglican Bishops ignore GAFCON and attend Lambeth

The vast majority of Anglican Bishops are ignoring GAFCON and planning to attend Lambeth. At a press conference at Lambeth Palace on Monday, Dr Williams said to those who had declined (on the grounds that the bishops of the US Episcopal Church were attending), he said: “I recognise their absolute right to choose in good faith and in conscience whether or not they can be there. The invitation is on the table. Naturally, I would be delighted to see more rather than fewer bishops there. That’s their choice, but the door is open.” The picture is significant because the bishop on the far left was a leading conservative who has left the GAFCON group to join Lambeth.

Dawani fails to divert GAFCON ‘pilgrims’

THE ORGANISERS of the Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) insist that they will be holding the event in Jerusalem, despite strong protests and an alternative suggestion from the Bishop in Jerusalem, the Rt Revd Suheil Dawani, and his colleagues in the Holy Land. Bishop Dawani says he learned about the conference from a press release.

A Saturday morning "massacre" in San Joaquin

During the Standing Committee meeting of January 19th, the Bishop determined that the elected members of the Standing Committee who had not publicly affirmed their standing in the Southern Cone [whose congregations are in discernment, some over the legality of convention's actions] were unqualified to hold any position of leadership in the Diocese, including any elected office. He pronounced us as unqualified. No resignations were given. The question of resignations was raised and rejected. The members of the committee at this morning's meeting were quite clear on this point, we did not resign, we were declared unqualified to hold office. The Bishop's decision affects up to 6 of the 8 elected members of the Committee including all of the clergy members.

The CofE's gay crisis shows that that liberal Anglicanism is finished, says Theo Hobson

This year Anglicanism will define itself with new clarity - the once-a-decade Lambeth conference will confirm the anti-liberal mood of the last five years. The humiliation of liberal Anglicanism will be complete. Its demand for equality for homosexuals has been thrown out in the most decisive possible way. I think it's time to admit that the tradition of liberal Anglicanism is finished. Those Anglicans who carry on calling for an "inclusive church" are relics of a previous era. They should face the fact that the religious landscape has changed utterly. Liberal Anglicanism has become oxymoronic. For the first time this church has defined itself in opposition to liberalism, taking a decisively reactionary stance on a crucial moral issue.

Many VA Faith Groups Oppose Attorney General Intervention in Episcopal Church legal cases

The Diocese of Virginia and The Episcopal Church filed their opposition to the motion by Virginia Attorney General to intervene in the consolidated church property cases. They noted that the Commonwealth had failed to meet the requirements that govern intervention in such a dispute. In further support of their opposition to the motion, they cited a 2005 letter from the office of then Attorney General Judith Williams Jagdmann stating that “As presently in effect [code section] 57-9 has constitutional problems.” The Episcopla church's concerns hae been supported by a coalition of 21 faith groups including the United Methodists, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in American, the Presbyterian Church USA, and the Jewish community. “We’re very concerned about this,” said Bishop Charlene Kammerer, Bishop of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. “Our polity, our constitution and our book of church law (The Discipline) make it very clear that all properties are held in trust for the denomination or annual conference. The Attorney General’s view strikes at the very heart of our constitution and our historic trust clause.”

Episcopal Church Bans Bishop for 2 Mos.

“The holdings of the diocese are still holdings of the diocese unless the court rules something differently”

The Episcopal Church banned a California bishop Friday from practicing his religious duties until March after he led his congregants to secede from the national church.

Bishop John-David Schofield drew sharp criticism from the U.S.-based denomination when he urged his conservative diocese to sever its ties to the church last month in a fight over the Bible and homosexuality.

Clergy and lay members of the Diocese of San Joaquin became the first full diocese to break from the U.S. wing of the 77 million-member worldwide Anglican family when they voted to secede Dec. 6. Read more
