The median price of a single-family home in Maui County has climbed to $630,000 for the first half of 2016, a sum real estate experts say is pricing locals out of the market. Realtors Association of Maui President Jeannie Wenger said home sales for the first half of the year have primarily been to locals for houses below the median price and to off-island buyers who can pay $600,000 and above, The Maui News reported. Between 2008 and 2015, mainland buyers purchased more homes in Hawaii County than anywhere else in the state, according to a new report. All told, 31.8 percent of Hawaii home sales to mainlanders were on the Big Island, totaling 10,456. Comment?

Scott Bradley, an HPA alumnus, was appointed chairman of the Board of Trustees at Hawaii Preparatory Academy effective earlier this month on July 1. He is serving a two-year term, succeeding Gregory R. Mooers, who will remain on the board as vice chair. Bradley, who joined the HPA board in 2012, is president of Bradley Properties, Ltd. and co-managing director of RT, LLC. "This is an exciting time in the history of HPA," said Bradley. Comment?

U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz implored the Federal Trade Commission Wednesday to investigate commercial use of the burgeoning short-term rental market on websites like Airbnb and VRBO, citing specific concerns of housing shortages, subsequent rent hikes, illegally zoned or maintained properties and discriminatory practices. Schatz , along with Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Elizabeth Warren , drafted a letter to FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez requesting studies be conducted to provide more clarity on the matter. Comment?
