The Red Lion Hotel Vancouver at the Quay has notified all 82 employees that they will be laid off effective Oct. 31. The Spokane-based chain says it hopes to reopen a new hotel on the site as part of the Port of Vancouver's Terminal 1 redevelopment. Negotiations are underway. Comment?

Home prices in the Portland-Vancouver metropolitan area have increased by 7.4 percent over the past year, exceeding the 4.9 percent increase in the S&P/Case-Shiller composite home price index of 20 metropolitan areas, according to a report released Tuesday. The 20-city index posted a 1.1 percent increase for the month, while the Portland-Vancouver area's one-month increase was 1.4 percent. Comment?

Windermere Stellar has renamed its Windermere Mortgage Services unit, which now will be called Penrith Home Loans, the company said Monday. The company has 11 offices in the Portland metro area, Vancouver and the north Oregon Coast. Comment?

Washington's program that allows parents to pay in advance for college tuition credits is on hold for the next two years, thrown into turmoil by the dropping cost of college. The Guaranteed Education Tuition Program, or GET, allows families to buy credits years before their kids are ready for college, locking them in at current rates. Comment?

A new Edward Jones survey reveals that most Canadians opt to pay off debt when granted a lump sum despite growing increasingly concerned about having to work longer to supplement retirement savings.
