Members Mortgage Services, a mortgage servicing cooperative owned and operated by credit unions in Kansas and throughout the region, recently reached the $1 billion mark in loans serviced, according to a news release. Established in 2004 by Hutchinson-based Heartland Credit Union, Members Mortgage Services is owned by 29 regional credit unions. Comment?

When the 2015 legislative session began in January, many commonsense legislators arrived in Topeka knowing Kansas faced a major budget crisis. We acknowledged, along with a majority of Kansans, the undeniable fact that our financial problems were a direct result of a massive tax loophole passed in 2012 that allowed more than 330,000 Kansas businesses to avoid paying any state income taxes. A married couple from India living unlawfully for many years in McPherson has been arrested and charged in a 45-count federal indictment charging illegal employment of aliens, various kinds of fraud and making false claims of U.S. citizenship. A third defendant in the case is a business partner of the McPherson couple in the ownership of a Lawrence liquor store. Comment?

A married couple from India who themselves are unlawfully in the United States have been arrested on an indictment charging unlawful employment of aliens, document fraud, bank fraud and making false claims of U.S. citizenship. Arrested were Satishkumar "Sam" Patel, 47, and his wife, Daxaben S. Patel, 36, both of McPherson, who are in federal custody and scheduled to appear today in U.S. District Court in Wichita. Comment?

With $700 billion dollars - about $2,400 for every man woman and child in America - Congress has just about paid back all those American and foreign banks for every bad loan they've ever made. All those credit card debts that people didn't feel like paying will soon be paid for by taxpayer money, courtesy of Congress. Comment?

After President Bush, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke pressured congressional leaders to approve a $700 billion bailout of the financial markets as soon as possible to prevent a global economic panic, lo and behold, we still ended up with a global panic. Perhaps it eased a bit with Monday's 936-point gain, but that remains to be seen. Comment?

It was none other than the prolific writer Toni Morrison who opined back in 1998 that Bill Clinton was like the " first Black President " because of the way he was being hounded by Kenneth Starr and the media, and it's a meme that has caught on over time for people who want to emphasize the ways in which the former President has always supposedly been "down for the cause" of progressive politics. We hear about the wonderful "Clinton economy" in the '90's and supposed advances in civil rights and women's rights during his tenure. Comment?
