Hawaii has the highest average mortgage closing costs in the nation, driven, in part, by high third-party fees, according to a ranking by Bankrate.com . Hawaii's average closing costs on a $200,000 mortgage totaled $2,163, the highest in the nation, followed by New Jersey at $2,094, Connecticut at $2,033, West Virginia at $1,971 and Arizona at $1,969. City Councilors opened a public forum on short-term or vacation rentals Aug. 3 by defending themselves from criticism about potential conflicts of interest on the issue. Mayor Frank Isganitis, who owns LimeRock Inn, said he received an email threat from a resident who said she would ruin his reputation in town if he didn't recuse himself from voting on the issue.
