Sterling Today must resubmit its application for financing of an apartment complex it hopes to build in the second through fifth floors of the Whiteside County-owned Lawrence Building in downtown Sterling. According to Mary Benson, president of Sterling Today, the initial application missed the cut by a single point. Comment?

I was asked to participate in a fundraising activity for Newman High School, particularly for replacing the boiler at an estimated cost of $250,000. In 2007, a plan was initiated to raise $2.5 million for various projects with the boiler being emphasized in Phase 3. Looking at the other projects, however, this endeavor seemed the most important of all. Comment?

The Whiteside County Board, after a short executive session toward the end of its meeting Tuesday, unanimously voted to buy the Lawrence Building – the second through fifth floors of the old building – known as the Lawrence Building condominium, for $30,000. STERLING – Plans are underway to transform the crumbling tower of the Lawrence Building into a 20-unit apartment complex. Comment?

Housing counselors are struggling to keep up with strong demand for foreclosure prevention services, while some communities lack counseling resources all together, according to a new report by Housing Action Illinois, a counseling advocate, and Woodstock Institute. The report, entitled On the Foreclosure Front Lines: Surveying the Capacity of HUD-Certified Housing Counseling Agencies in Illinois, found that much of South Suburban Cook County, McHenry County, and parts of Northwest Will County had startling gaps in counseling services. A former Moecherville Water District board president is facing federal charges after being accused of stealing district funds, officials said. Mark McDonald, 57, of Aurora, is charged with stealing $33,597 in property mortgaged and pledged to the Secretary of Agriculture, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois.
