    Although the City Council has declared a housing emergency because of rapidly rising rents and home prices, it is approving a series of measures that will increase the cost of new home construction - most in the name of building more affordable housing. On Wednesday the council approved a 1 percent construction excise tax on all new construction, including residential construction, to help fund new affordable housing projects.

    Former Perth socialite Radhika Oswal tried to avoid paying creditors by transferring ownership of Perth's infamous "Taj on Swan" and another luxury property to a sham company owned by her brother, a court has ruled. The Federal Court ruling clears the way for the Australian Taxation Office to try to seize the unfinished mansion and another property, located in affluent Perth suburbs Peppermint Grove and Dalkeith, to pay the Oswals' alleged tax debt.

    The province is taking away self-regulatory power from the Real Estate Council of BC, Christy Clark announced Wednesday, while promising "more to come" from Victoria to address skyrocketing home prices. The premier said the province will take action on all 28 recommendations made in a scathing, independent review of the industry released Tuesday, while also going a step further by changing the role of the superintendent of real estate.
