Thousands of El Paso County homeowners don't have mortgages on their homes, which means they pay their own property taxes and also likely have more spendable income - which might provide a boost for area retailers, an expert said. The fact that many El Pasoans don't have a mortgage came to light in the past few weeks as several hundred homeowners rushed to the city's Consolidated Tax Office in Downtown El Paso to pay their 2016 property taxes by the Jan. 31 payment deadline. 3 comments

El Paso County's home prices increased almost 4.9 percent in the third quarter compared to a year ago, a slower growth pace than the national increase of 5.2 percent, data released Thursday show. El Paso's median, or market midpoint, price for an existing, single-family home was $151,200 in the July-September quarter, an increase of $7,000 from the same quarter in 2015, the National Association of Realtors reported. LONDON, February 27 Fitch Ratings says Barclays' resilient domestic earnings were diluted by the group's corporate and investment banking business in 2016, although stronger capital markets activity and a stronger dollar compared with sterling had a positive effect on fourth quarter and overall results.
